Used to be (for me anyways) that a chaplain was pretty much a must for my previous editions of BA codexes, but no your right not really anymore.

in a vanilla army, the Chaplain is a better HQ then the similerly priced Captain.

he makes a squad fearless and has a PW for the same price.

rerolls for a unit of assault terminators is also pretty beast.

He is a force multiplier(like the Libby) unlike a Captain(unless mounted on a bike)

I run a JP Chappy with my assault squad. Rerolls and Fearless add up.... Even run Chappy with dual LC Vanguards for maximum killy.

I used to use them until the new Blood Angels book came out. I now use a Librarian with the preferred enemy psychic power.

I seriously consider damaging the integrity of lists just to fit that stud in.

I run one in my BA lists in which I take Death Company. Not only does he fill my HQ needs he offers synergy to my Death Company. I also love the Model I use for it as its the Legion of the Damned Sergeant with a power weapon and Bolt pistol.

Cheers,

My default Space Marine army used to run with a chaplain, I've been playing around with Librarians and Vulkan lately.

I have two Chaplain models, actally. One's a Jump Pack/Crozius/Bolt Pistol one, the other is a second edition Terminator Chaplain I got from a friend, with a Lightning Claw and a Storm Bolter.

To be honest I like the old one better. Too bad he can't actually have a lightning claw. Need to replace that...

When I had my BA, I used one to resounding effect:

A termie chappie (reclursiarch really, but who cares) and 5 DC in a Phobos Land Raider (I didn't use a LRC as I needed the lascannons and my LRC was already filled to the brim with termies). The chappie is what's needed to really make DC go from good unit to OMGWTFBBQ status.

And the chappies are pretty sturdy little f**kers. Mine took out a full wounds Jain Zar.

Who uses chaplains? Marine armies who want to duke it out in CC. He may not be as dominant an HQ as some of your other choices on his own, but if you actually crunch the numbers on what he does to a CC squad...it's terrifying.

As an example, I was going back and forth on a DC army about whether to put a chaplain with them or not. I mean, he costs as much as 5 more DC, who each get 3 attacks (4 on the charge), and already have the Fearless USR. Then I ran the numbers and there was no longer a question.

TL;DR: Chaplains are for CC-aficionados who understand math

I have the old one on a bike and not only is he pretty good but they look very good on the table. From a non-competitive stand point I do enjoy them

I play 40k to have fun. winning is less than half of the fun so i take whatever i want whenever i want too. sure i loose sometimes but i still enjoy playing. I take a jump chaplain with a fist in a full unit of 10 assault marines. One time i wiped a pair of wraithlords and about 36 eldar with that one unit. i was UNSTOPPABLE. well... not really. a fleeing eldar fired one shot and killed my last assault marine, but it was a fun game.

Take whatever you want and play for fun, winning is just part of the experience.

Chaplains used to have an equivalent stat line to a SM captain and had a 4++ save and power weapon for free besides allowing rerolls to hit and making a unit fearless. He was the cheapest bang for the buck add to any army list.

Of the trio of "Company level" leaders ( Captain, Chaplain, Librarian ), the Captain almost never sees play
in my Codex:SM forces. Apart from the bike angle, he does not give anything to your force. The Chaplain
is the default HQ choice for me. He enhances the staying power ( Fearless ) and killing potential ( re-rolls )
of a close combat unit to respectable levels. Nothing is more annoying than your Assault Terminator Squad
taking that one casualty that results in them running away before ever reaching the enemy line.

In a blob-Templar list, a Master of Sanctity can turn a 20-man blob into something obscene, giving you a minimum roll of 4 for righteous zeal (which you auto-pass thanks to fearless) with a reroll. If it's Reclusiarch Grimaldus, you've got a relic for when you positively want to kill anything. There's nothing that says overkill so much as Grimaldus leading a 20-man blob charging something, 5 assault terminators charging something else nearby and you getting 12 on the relic roll.

Sadly, my current list is more of a shooty one, and as such there's no room for a Chaplain.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

Well....

If you are looking into Interrogator-Chaplains; they turn any close-combat geared Deathwing Squad (LC's or TH's) into a mini-deathstar. Rerolling all those extra attacks from the Deathwing Banner guarantees not much will be standing after you charge. With I5 and 3 wounds means he can get some PW quick hits in and also soak up some non-IDing wounds. Also the Interrogator-Chappie can bring some cheap anti-armor to a DW squad with a combi-melta shot (with BS5). Give him terminator armor and he can teleport in first turn along with other Deathwing Squads.
