Best foot forward - listen to precinct omegas podcast about commission painting.

http://precinctomega.podbean.com

I can definitely agree with him when I say you will not become rich. Make sure you're organised! There's a wolrd of difference between doing a job for people you know, and having a stranger put his trust in you to do him proud. Make sure you understand that.

There's a lot of commissioned painters knocking about on dakka that would be more than willing to impart advice. Ask and ye shall recieve. However, there are people who have more talent and have been established a heck of a lot longer than myself - so they're probably going to be of more use!

Best of luck.

Your painting ain't bad, at least as far as I can tell. Some work probably needs improving but it's hard to tell what because it's hard to make out details from your pics. If I were to give you an ordered list of what you need to do to get started doing commission work, it would be 3 steps:

Step #1. Constantly improve your quality.

Step #2. Get better pictures.

Step #3. Did you get better pictures yet? If not, go back to step #2.

Customer service is key. If something screws up, fix it as best you can. The commission painting biz is a small one, and word will get around. There was a big snafu in my most recent commission that was both my fault and the US postal service's fault, and as a result I pretty much let the guy have the second half of the commission for half price. Since everybody was a good sport about it, I've got more work from him. Also, start a blog here on Dakka or elsewhere about your painting. People can track your painting as it happens that way, and you'll have an avenue for feedback to keep you motivated.
