Huh?
No, searchlights are generally not bad for anyone. They have no range, and they automatically come on when you fire one of the vehicles weapons.

but dont the vehicles need to use the night fighting rule during there shooting turn. so you have range 48 lascannons but the night fighting rule only goes up tp 36 inches

You don't use night fighting rules if you use a searchlight on a target, but then when targeting that vehicle you don't use ight fighting rules either.

Is sounds like you are a little confused about the Search lights. Here is how it works.
1) Night Fighting Rules are in Effect (Turn 1 for Dawn of War, otherwise special night time mission)
2) Vehicles w/ a searchlight attempts to shoot something, rolls for night fighting.
3) Vehicle rolls well and can shoot. The target is now illuminated
4) Second unit tries to shoot at the same target as the first, they do Not roll for night fighting as the target is illuminated.
What if the night fighting rules are not in effect?
1) Everything shoots as normal. Searchlights are just decoration.
Search Lights are never bad*. They never limit your range. Then will only help you.
(*the only reason they could be considered "bad" is if you have to pay extra points for them and you do not have enough points.)
