Poll: 46 Percent of Mississippi Republicans Want Ban On Interracial Marriage

A survey showed that 46 percent of Mississippi Republicans believe interracial marriage should be banned.

Public Policy Polling interviewed 400 usual Mississippi primary voters and found that 46 percent think marriage between two people of different races should be illegal, 40 percent think it should be legal, and 14 percent were unsure.

In the same poll 37 percent said that they would vote for Mississippi governor Haley Barbour if they could in next year’s presidential election.

Forty percent identified themselves as very conservative, and 36 percent described themselves as “somewhat conservative.” Only 4 percent called themselves “very liberal.”

The survey’s margin of error is 4.9 percent. PPP also said that factors such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting may have introduced additional error.

Mississippi ranks low in:

* Lowest percent of people who have completed high school
* 2nd Lowest "best educated index"
* Lowest percent children ages 0-5 who read every day
* Lowest percent students above advanced level (8th grade math assessment)

Mississippi ranks high in:

* Most Lynchings (both total and per capita)
* Highest Death rate per 100,000
* 2nd Highest Gonorrhea rate

They also receive the second highest amount of federal funding for the amount they are taxed (And even then, they missed first place by a margin of something like 0.5% to New Mexico). They receive $2.02 for every $1 collected from them.

Also there is this gem for a license plate honoring the first grand wizard of the KKK.

A poll to be released next week asks them the question "did the right side win the civil war?"......

I don't think the point of polls is to be as "close to even as possible". Though I do think that this sounds pretty suspect. Thats pretty awful if true.

I'll give the full 4.9%. Then you've still got 41% of the population of a state believing that the state should stop mixed marriage. Doesn't that seem a little bit incredible to you?

It was pretty negative on the state. But really, when a poll shows a large percentage of the population is opposed to inter-racial marriage, shouldn't we be negative?

3) Mid Mid West= Fields of grain and serial killers.
4) South Mid West= Texas, almost Texas, part California and Texas, and Dry heat.
5)North East Coast= New York, Boston, Major Cities, and original home of the Puritan colonies.
6) Mid East Coast= Military(oorah!), D.C., History(first permanent english colony, surrender of the British during Revolutionary War, Start and End of Civil War, first colonial capital, and the majority of Civil War battles all in one state), Sweet Tea, Mountains, and Moon Pie.
7)South East Coast= Peaches and old people.(Georgia was actually founded as a buffer colony between the protestant english colonies and the catholic spanish colony in Florida)
8) Deep South= Banjos, Confederate flags, trucks with lift kits, rascism, low GDP. If we ignore them maybe they'll eventually go away.

Being in a very long term inter racial relationship,and having lived in Mississippi for some time,I can attest to these figures being somewhat accurate...at least given my experiances.

Now,I certianly don't wish to give the impression that MS. is nothing more than a state filled with illiterate truck driving,sheet wearing red-necks...because it's not,
there are many progressive,open minded and friendly people living there,particularly along the Gulf Coast (Biloxi/Gulfport) area

However,during our time there,we also encountered a great many "disapproving" looks/comments,as well as those who were outright hostile to the very idea of an inter-racial couple...of course we've also encountered this same sort of thing in New Orleans (though it's much less frequent),Atlanta and even in New York City....and not just from White Rebuplicans.

I remember the news story about a white guy who was jumped by a group of AA's because he was dating an AA woman. Its really a sad thing, love is love you know...

I digress, living in several of those demographic areas I have seen the exceptions to the rule. Mississippi and even western Virginia(not West Virginia which is another state) scare me. We also have our rascist HQ in Virginia, and its not in the redneck area.

Being that I was born and raised in Kansas, I must disagree with your exceptionally shallow verbal flatulence in the most stringent terms. You should stay in whatever "Civilized" part of the world you call home, because the rest of us have no use for you.

Kansas has stuff... like fields and tornados(being in tornado alley and all), its cultured but not like other places and it seems like my whole concept behind the post was missed by you. I was saying that each place and region has its own culture.

Unfortunately you do have a use for my locale.
1) The Pentagon.
2) Half of Washington D.C.
3) Norfolk Naval Base(home of Atlantic Naval Command and largest naval base in the world).
4) Quantico(one of the largest marine corp bases and also FBI training center)
5) Langley Air Force Base
6) Virginia Military Institute(they march in the inaugural parades.)
7) Oceana Naval Air Station(that's in NCIS).
8) Little Creek Amphibious Base(home of SEAL teams 2,4,8, and 10).

We're chock full of uses besides smoked hams and tobacco you know. Then Kansas does have a bad spot of history in the pre-Civil War era, Bleeding kansas and all.

You're missing a few states. Kentucky and Tennessee aren't even 'Deep South.'

Actually, if this were my data, I would postulate that the 14% of people who responded "unsure" were likely to really be respondents in the "illegal" category but for the perception of the unpopular nature of their views. People lie on surveys all the time, especially political surveys.

That said, there is reason to question the manner in which respondents were selected, as that can have a huge effect on results; especially given that survey respondents, being highly engaged politically, tend to have stronger, and therefore more extreme, views.

Umm, if it was dead even, that 50% think interracial marriage should be banned and 50% do not, what would be your conclusion?

If half the people in a state believe that black and white people should not be allowed to get married that's pretty terrifying. If you did a poll like that in the UK or one of the more reasonable states in the US you'd find almost no one objects to black and white people being married.

I can guess what you're thinking, that if it was 50% each way then there'd be nothing significant in the results. Well that's a statistics epic fail. If you were asking the question "does it matter which side of the bed you get out of in the morning as to whether you have a good day" and you get results 50% each way then you're demonstrating no significance in the results. But the data from a survey like this is entirely different in nature. You're not measuring some random result, you're polling opinions. And 40%, give or take 5%, of people thinking that interracial marriage should be banned is very shocking,

I'm fairly sure that ss marriages will be legal soon. I have some family members who already live that way so it seems commonplace to me already.

A point I've brought up before as well...

By and large the arguments against interracial marriages/same sex marriages simply boil down to "We don't like/are uncomfortable with it" or "It's not normal",and have absolutely zero basis in logic .
