Hi,

I've posted this army before as a smaller force but I wanted to run it past everyone again.
I'm trying to keep the force as flexible as possible:

HQ:
Librarian [100 pts]
> Null Zone
> Avenger

Troops:
Tactical Squad x 10 [215 pts]
> Combi-Melta
> Flamer
> Missile-Launcher
> Rhino

Tactical Squad x 10 [215 pts]
> Combi-Melta
> Flamer
> Missile-Launcher
> Rhino

Elites:
Dreadnought [150 pts]
> Multi-Melta
> Heavy Flamer
> Drop Pod

Dreadnought [150 pts]
> Multi-Melta
> Heavy Flamer
> Drop Pod

Sternguard x 5 [185 pts]
> 4 x combi-melta
> 1 x combi-flamer
> Drop Pod
> Librarian will attach to this unit

Terminator Assault Squad [440 pts]
> Thunder Hammer/Storm-Shield
> Land Raider

TOTAL -- 1,455

So I've got 45 points remaining. How do you think I should use these? An additional Terminator to round it out to six? Any other tweaks I can make in terms of weapons that would make this more competitive?

Thanks,
Gribs

If your suiciding in your Libby with your Sternguard, kind of a waste. You actually might be better off putting him in terminator armor and adding him to your Assault terminators. This has the added benifit of being on the table right away and protecting your guys from Psy-shennanigans if you are not going first. If your happy with the army, adding a Storm Shield + Terminator armor is 40pts and will help keep him alive. A Sarge somewhere can get melta bombs to finish off the points.

Combi weapons on your tactical sarges are iffy in my personal experience due to one shot, one miss and the expense. If you miss, fail to pen, or even take out that vehicle if you do pen, you have nothing left to stop it with. If you insist on using them, make them a combi flamer instead and give your special weapon a melta. I think you might be disappointed with a single missile launcher as well, but it is the best 'all comers' weapon.

I would also suggest a 3rd scoring squad if you can swing it, as your light on scoring units. If you drop the Combi on you sarges and give your tact squads meltas (10pts), drop the heavy flamers on your dreads (20pts) and the 45pts you can have a 5 man scout squad with camo cloaks and sniper rifles that can sit on a home objective in cover.

Also, running a Dread with your Rhinos and LR is not a terrible idea either, and saves you 35pts and kinda give you some back-up against turbo-boosting mecha (And now you can do the above AND have your Libby in TDA+SS). Only thing about drop pods is that half of the number will come in, so alot of people just use one, because you know when it is coming in. Since your Sterguard looks like a suicide unit, dropping that second drop pod might not be a bad call.

How my proposed tweeks would look like...

Libraian with Terminator armor and a storm shield -140pts
> Null Zone
> Avenger

Troops:

Scout Squad x5 -95pts
> Camo Cloaks
> Sniper Rifles
> Melta-bomb

Tactical Squad x10 -210pts
> Meltagun
> Missile Launcher
> Rhino

Tactical Squad x10 -210pts
> Meltagun
> Missile Launcher
> Rhino

Dreadnought -105pts
> Multi-Melta

Dreadnought -105pts
> Multi-Melta

Sternguard x 5 -185pts
> 4 x Combi-melta
> 1 x Combi-Flamer
> Drop Pod

Terminator Assault Squad -450pts
> Thunder Hammers/Storm Shields
> Land Raider
> Librarian attached to this unit

1500pts

If anything, I hope this gives you something to think about, weather you use the advice or not.

PS: Your LR costs 250pts and your 5 man Assault terminators costs 200pts, so 450, not 440.

I like the idea of putting the librarian with the terminator squad and making the sternguard unit a "pure" suicide unit (i.e. no dread/librarian support).
If I cut the heavy flamers on the dreads and in my tactical squads won't that make my army very susceptible to swarm armies? I've left in the flamers for now on the dreads and tac squads ... exspecially if I'm keeping the dreads with the rhinos ... they'll have meltaguns as well so I will be less reliant on the combi-meltas working. Also, if I add the scouts (presumably on foot as I don't have the points left to buy transportation for them) won't they simply be left behind and exposed by the rest of the army?
I suppose I could make this a 1,750 list and add transport that way ... I was just hoping to keep it at 1,500 points. One other question I had for everyone ... for a terminator squad "deathstar" type unit ... which land raider is best? I notice there's a 10 point differential between them.

Here's what I was so far based on your suggestions:

Librarian with Terminator armor and a storm shield -140pts
> Null Zone
> Avenger

Troops:

Tactical Squad x10 -215pts
> Combi-Melta
> Flamer
> Missile Launcher
> Rhino

Tactical Squad x10 -215pts
> Combi-Melta
> Flamer
> Missile Launcher
> Rhino

Dreadnought -115pts
> Multi-Melta
> Heavy Flamer

Dreadnought -115pts
> Multi-Melta
> Heavy Flamer

Sternguard x 5 -185pts (Suicide unit!)
> 4 x Combi-melta
> 1 x Combi-Flamer
> Drop Pod

Terminator Assault Squad -440pts (Deathstar unit!)
> Thunder Hammers/Storm Shields
> Land Raider Redeemer
> Librarian attached to this unit

... 1,425 points if i'm doing my math right.

That would leave me with enough to get a single 5-man unit of scouts with sniper rifles and no camo ... or maybe something else?

Here's a thought as well ... maybe I could add Pedro Kantor to the Terminator squad to make it a scoring unit ... using those extra points?

Why you got combi meltas when the flamers should be shooting at infantry? You want combi meltas you take meltas in the squad to double your chances at shooting and roll them seperately and see if the melta hits before rolling the combi melta.

I've tried Dreadnoughts in Pods and with multi meltas they're hit and miss. Sometimes you do the deed sometimes not, also depends what you're shooting at. I've been thinking assault cannons if I ever did anything like that but never tried it. Again comes down to what you're shooting at.

I know why the Sternguard have a Pod but just consider they won't last long. As long as you accept that then you should be ok. I guess it's only the real way to get a third Drop Pod in with a cheap suicide melta squad.

No codex to hand but I thought all Pedro did was making Sternguard scoring units? Less there is a typo in what you wrote above.

MM on the Landraider can be quite handy as well as extra armour to make sure its able to deliver your termies when you want. I run a similar list though no drop-poding sternguard

From my experience what slows these lists down is getting your tacticals into combat and getting stuck there because being outnumbered or the enemy armour save is good. I would throw a power sword and boltgun on the sarge rather than a combi wep just give them that edge when they are holding an objective or trying to push an enemy off theirs.

Also switch out two termies for twin LC because striking last is a real pain when your outnumbered no matter how nice a 2+/3++ seems.

What you on about Pedro for? Pedro isn't even in the list.

Tacticals don't go in combat. They're a shooty unit.

Hammernators are superior to claw Terminators.

I think you should change the flamer on one of the Tac squads to a melta gun or a plasma gun.
