Now I know for Skaven the ultimate source would be the Uniforms & Heraldry for the different clans, but I'm not sure what to do for HE. Do they have different factions within them? Like having two warrior units painted differently? Or do the different colour schemes for HE come from the different units being different colours from each other? It's my first fantasy stuff and all I've done is way too many test models for painting my Space Wolves (worried about screwing up on the regular ones, gonna paint them as soon as exams are done).

I don't know I think they're pretty genericaly colored and the different units from different regions with different heraldry would actualy be different units

Probably all the heraldry is in the army book.
It may even exist on GW website.

A lot of armies have dedicated fansites so it may be worth doing a Google search

Personally I would consider the overall unity of the army scheme, rather than different units having different heraldry.
Though there may be some secondary element within that if you follow.

The only difference is generally the main color, the defenders of ulthuan are the white and blue and the color that is usually changed is the blue, i think chrace uses red and nagarythe uses black.
Then it comes down to where your force is from on how many of certain units you would have, hoeth and saphery you will see more mages and sword masters, Averlorn and obviously chrace you will have more white lions and lion chariots etc, but thats only if you are basing an army on that area, take what you like in your list
But I think generally units change there armor color for the force/region they are fighting for.

Perhaps if you wanted to change the colors only slightly you can use a teal/dark teal and cream for your high elves. That would be a nice, but not overwhelming change from the norm of bright blue and white.

The problem with elves, at least for me, is that there are too many different kinds. If you go with green, it's more of a wood elf look, or if you go with purple and black you have dark elves. High elves are hard in that regard to do anything different
