When you use an named character, do you play them with their official fluff guiding you, or do you only use their rules to apply to your own characters?

So do you play with Lelith Hesperax, or use her rules for (insert your own creation here)?
Maybe you use Marneus Calgar as Geralt Caspius of the Black Dawn chapter that you created?

I usually use named characters only for their rules because I find it fun to create my own story as I play.
What about you?!

Using the rules for your own characters IS how they intended.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

True. It encourages you to do so in the SM codex atleast.

While I could have worded that better, it's still a valid question IMO.

Personally I'd run the actual character where appropriate (in some cases I started a whole new army because I liked the character). However I do have a number of "Count As" characters as well, mainly because I dont want 10 different SM chapters.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do.

I run Lysander as Lysander, because I play Imperial Fists. Other than that, everybody is my own creation.

10'000 years ago, Terra was under siege. The Sons of Rogal Dorn stood firm at the gate, never letting an inch slip away so long as we drew breath. We were killed in droves defending the Emperor and his Imperium, and we killed many in turn. We defended the Emperor and his Imperium, and this is what it means to be a Fist

I do both. I do a fair bit more "count's as" when I actually build my models though, so I guess I'm more "option 2."

Yeah! Who needs balanced rules when everyone can take giant stompy robots! Balanced rules are just for TFG WAAC players, and everyone hates them.
