Apparently an infected topic. So let's not have it go that way?

I'm looking to replace my Vallejo Model Color paints with something that a) doesn't separate from the medium in an instant b) comes in dropper bottles and c) has a pretty huge range d) is a bit more vivid

Game Color is kinda out, I really don't like them. They dry a bit satin and there just is something about them I don't like.

So the next obvious step is to try out the Reaper-paints.

Anyone have experience of both (Vallejo / Reaper) and some input to give? I'm fully aware that it might be best just to keep the VMC and work around my issues with it. But I'd like to try Reaper out. So in order to minimize any "OMGWTF"-moments I'm looking for a bit of schooling on them. How do they act on the palette? Thinning? How are the whites, blacks and metallics compared to other brands?

Hi,

I have about 50 Reaper Paints. Not the new HD series but I have the Master Series.

I have not used Vallejo Game Color, only Citadel and Vallejo Model.

The come in dropper bottles (duh), has a HUDE range like almost $1k for all of them. The color vary, alot are VERY vivid. I normally do not hve trouble thinning them but one or two colors acutally seperate. They don't cover as well as GW foundation, you will need layer to build up as they as they are intended for blending and for more experienced painters. The color Misty Grey can cover a black undercoat in one or two layers and it will take white one layer to cover it (if they Misty Grey isn't white enough for you). The whites and black are very good, however GW metallics are still the best imo.

Have you used GW paints at all? If you're a beginner use GW paints and if you are more experienced, use the Reaper ones. I wouldn't recommend using Reaper Master Series on an army, but for displat models their great.

If you have anymore questons let me know ^_^

I have a pretty extensive collection of both VMC, VMA and Citadel. ^^

Sounds like it's worth trying out. Thanks

I use a little bit of everything: GW, VMC, VGC, RPP, and RMS. On the Reaper stuff, I generally like Vallejo better. Reaper seems to seperate just as much as the Vallejo stuff does if left to sit. They do have a few paints that I absolutely love.

RMS Creamy Ivory is the best white I have ever used. It's an off white, but it has excellent coverage for a white and makes a great undercoat for true white, or can be used just as your primary white with true white highlights. Also it's fabulous for replicating bone/parchment with a sepia wash. I like their RMS Scorched Metal better than GW's Tin Bitz for undercoating metallic golds.

On their Pro Paint series, I have their line of colored blacks (basicly a color shade so dark it's almost black) and I have been using them extensively for undercoating/shading. They have a VERY matte finish to them. They tend to be flatter than most primers I use.

As I said, overall I prefer Vallejo, but there is some good stuff in the Reaper line. They definately need some thinning, and possibly some Flo-Aid. I have had mine for a long time so it's also probable that they have thickened up a lot more over the last couple years.
