I helped clean up a stream in a national park today. I really feel great about it. This is the second time I've volunteered for community based projects, the first being some weed-removal near local bridge. I got some community service hours too, but that wasn't the whole reason for doing it

What kind of things have you guys done for your community? 'Nothing' is an acceptable answer :3 I'd like to get some ideas on things I can do to earn service hours for my graduation, basically. Aside from that though, I'd like to know what upstanding citizens you are

I actually think there was a thread about this a while back, but I can't find it

If you want service hours, find your nearest church, the pastors/priests generally can either give you something to do or direct you to someone who can. Otherwise the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, and similar orgs can help you out.

As for me, I don't do community service.

That's a good idea. I think I'll try the synagogue instead though. Christians creep me out

Do something you like.

I'm a primary architect/interior designer on re-designing a teen center for the public library, a project I decided to do.

Did I mention I'm 15?

Or try to find a local Women's (Woman's?) shelter and offer to clean linens, do laundry, or whatever else they need. Places like that can always use help.

Go to the local pound and offer to walk dogs.

Most of the stuff I do is related to my profession, so it probably wouldn't help you too much

...urrrr... I dunno

I volunteered to help tutor a kid at English Lit once. That was actually pretty fun, he was a decent enough kid, and he wanted to learn, which was nice.

Primary? Sounds prestigious

We have a fairly tight-knit community here. There's lots of old hippies who like helping out around town. I'm probably more fortunate than a lot of people. Like... People in mississippi

We have a nice YMCA I could try too, and an old folks home, and a library, and a dog shelter, and a national park, and a community center..... That's more or less all the bases covered, I think.

Nothing, I need money and doing morally righteous acts doesn't give me the warm feeling inside people promise me, it simply feels like i've wasted time that I could've spent doing a paid job.

Im not sure if this count as "volunteer" work since i get paid like normal staff. But then again i know the staff ever since i was little.

During summer break between working as swimming instructors i help out between Bonsor Rec and CGB Pool when they have lake side activities as life guard.

Its really cool since most of the staff are actually my teachers when i was young. One big family!

a couple of times when i was working for a Supermarket, i arranged for everything that was going to be thrown away as 'wastage' (basically the use-by-dates were close) over the Christmas holidays was given to a homeless shelter (or two) that one of my Dad's friends runs.
Its a great feeling to help people, but organising it was a pain in the im not afraid to admit.

Did tons and tons of things while in the Scouts as a lad. All of it I consider worthwhile.

Nowadays every minute I stay at work past 3:15 helping students with crap they blew off during class and need extra-special-snowflake-time to make the grade I count as volunteer work.

/sigh

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

I volunteered some ungodly amount of hours at a summer day camp in the bad part of a town. Eastview Boys and Girls Club Oshawa, good times and messed up children. The satisfaction of seeing some of the kids develop over several years was worth all the time I could have been making money at McDonalds...which I did afterwards.

I did a couple of afternoons a week for over a year in an Oxfam Bookshop. Nice crowd of people to work with and generally nice customers. Attracted a few odd balls though, like this one guy who would come in just to tell us about his latest 9/11 conspiracy DVD he'd bought off eBay.

The closest Oxfam to us was weird, you'd walk in and the staff would stop what they're doing and watch you like a Lion watches a pack of Gazelles; there's just something unnerving about seemingly unblinking old people following you around the shop with their eyes.

Check into your local National Parks volunteer program. With many years of funding cuts, the NPS needs volunteers more than ever.
When I was much younger I did volunteer Living History at Antietam, Harpers Ferry and Gettysburg parks. They were fun times and I met some great people through doing so.

If you aren't working, or have very little work experience, there can be significant, long term profit incentives for volunteering if only because it fills white space on your resume.

I give blood pretty regularly, and In the past I've done work with a low income income tax preperation group.

I feel bad, because I rarely feel good after volunteering, aside from projects or tasks that I enjoyed. I'm an Eagle Scout, so I did plenty, and I've realized that I don't like working hard.

So, I admire those that do volunteer.

I used to pass out flyers for a local club that featured local bands. It was fun, got to know alot of people that liked rock/metal bands. Sadly, it shut down a few years ago. That was really it for my volunteer work

I'm involved in a project that pairs up art students with children with mental disabilities to teach them photography. It's also a partial historical preservation project, as we are trying to document a neighborhood that is scheduled to be more or less demolished and the photos we take are going up on permanent display along the side of an inner city school. It's actually pretty fun and rewarding stuff.

I also volunteer to do trail maintenance on local mountain biking trails.
