Anyone familiar with the Painting and Modelling sections of this site or attending Adepticon will be familiar with the work of Brandon Palmer of GMM Studios, who produces some of the most beautiful and characterful armies out there.

He has now produced a 2 DVD set tutorial to help us learn how to get that army done in time and look good. As someone who's benefited from his advice on this site, I thought I'd post it here for folks to see.

Coolminiornot wrote:Brandon Palmer of GMMstudios charges 4 figure sums to paint other people's armies. Now you too can benefit from his experience painting literally hundreds of armies. In the first of a series of videos, see how he prepares an Elysian Dropship army to a high standard.

Brandon gives you detailed instruction on preparation as well as walks you through his process step by step, sharing valuable insights along the way.

Now you too can benefit from his experience! No more silver surfer armies, or sad grey primer troops.

Disc 1 covers in detail, preparing your area, the tools, airbrushes and compressors you will require, proper ventilation and paint booth construction ideas, paints and much more.

Disc 2 shows you how to quickly paint, weather and finish your Valkyries, and efficiently finish painting large numbers of troops.

As to how good this guy is, proof positive, feast your eyes:

Brandon has done small custom videos for me in the past to help with certain techniques. They were fast and rough and produced amazing results for me. I can only imagine how good this is, as he put effort in it. I will be grabbing it.

I was just remarking to my wife how I was actually thinking of picking this up. Painting lots of minis to a high standard is more useful to me than producing one or two really amazing ones, and honestly even getting my one off's up to that standard in a more reasonable amount of time would be a pretty good improvement.

Anyone have it yet? Any reviews out there? Specifically I am interested in the discussion on air brushes and the like, but also just general interest. I was tempted to pick up Alexi-Z's video, but wow, 15 hours of watching painting seemed like something I would never really do. Granted, that was just based on the preview videos I saw, so it might well be really good too and I just didn't know.

Lol, hey it's no big woop. I'm glad it was you MGS, I'm glad it was you...

I ordered the bugger to include in my growing collection of Airbrush DVDs, I used mine for the first time this week and it was awesome. I look forward to seeing what Brandon does differently and how he works. The speed he put that Ork army together for Adepticon was borderline ridonculous, I can do a lot of stuff, but speed isn't one of them lol.

Speaking of which, someone get Brandon in here to pimp his wares! I would like to know how this came about, and what is next for him!

Cheers boys -

I plan to write a review for this at some point, but this is a great buy. He gives out plenty of great advice and expert opinion and can be heard clearly, the music in the background isn't a problem like in some other dvds. The dvd is especially helpful if you're looking to get into airbrushing. He goes over basically all of the materials he uses in detail and he employs painting techniques that aren't obvious and have been used by the masterclass single miniatures painters. A beginner can appreciate the video but I think more advanced painters could probably learn alot from it as well.

Do you have to have (or be willing to buy) an airbrush and compressor to get any use out of this DVD? I'm not very fond of them and honestly, can't afford one at the moment, but I do like to try to brush up on my painting skills every so often.

As WD seems to have abandoned trying to teach people how to paint any better than basic tabletop standard now, having dropped 'Eavy Metal Masterclass in favour of a couple of ways of doing base colour, wash, drybrush/highlight, I guess I'm going to have to find teaching materials elsewhere.

Even if an airbrush is in the instructions, you can apply the same techniques with a brush. It just takes way longer.

Seriously, if you're going to speedpaint an army, get yourself a cheap airbrush-setup. It will be so worth it in the long run. So much worth it that you probably have time to paint yet another army in the time it would take you to brush-paint the first one.

And if you still want instructionals above and beyond current WD 'eavy Metal stuff, check out youtube. There are -tons- of tutorials there. From beginners to really advanced multi-media typ techniques.

Miniature Mentor has a speed-painting tutorial as well. For US$25 or something. There are some tips n neat tricks to pick up in that one.

Eagerly waiting for my DVD(s) to arrive in the mailbox. But then again, I'm kinda a "instructional DVD"-hoarder.

Thanks for the recommendations on the youtube vids. I'm not really interested in speedpainting, I have a small enough army (Chaos Daemons) that I can spend 4-6 hours on each model if I want to. My main goal is to have every model painted at the highest standard I can, and hopefully improve a lot by the end, but obviously apart from practice, I'd also like to get techniques under my belt. Hence the tutorials.
