Sitting at home constructing GK lists I keep being frustrated by the Grand Master. While he is complete awesomesauce both in melee and when it comes to special abilities (rad grenades, grand strategy etc.) I've had a major problem:

What the gak do I put him with?

My current solution is to deepstrike him in with terminators, but not only does this mean that he risks mishaping, it might also mean that he hits the board on turn 5 without any meaningful interaction whatsoever. When combined with the terminator price tag, that's quite a bit of points that aren't doing anything. My question to my fellow dakkanauts therefore is: Where do I put a Grand Master?

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

You could always use your terminators as a shooting fire base.

Or keep in mind that because the GM is in terminator armour doesn't necessarily mean he has to be run with a unit in terminator armour.

The issue then would be having your super-expensive melee facecleaver unit stuck moving 6" a turn and asking for any anti-tank weapons to come their way. Regarding running with other units, that means he's not in a transport or he's in a 200+ transport. If he's outside mobility will be an issue, if he's in a LR/SR it'll eat points.

I'm almost considering to run him in a Chimera with death-cult assassins. At least then he'll have a transport.

I have seriously been considering him, but I'm let down by the fact that his terminators can't take a psycannon and by the fact that they aren't scoring. Oh, and rad grenades are my friends. Might give him a try though.

I stick him in a 10 man Terminator squad with Halberds and 2 psycannons and attach an Ordo Malleus Terminator Inquisitor with a third psycannon.

That results in a lot of ablative bodies plus 12 psycannon shots 'no matter what'.

Also, with psychic communion you've got a 3+ to show up via Deepstrike on T2, so odds of him getting stuck in reserves for eternity is poor.

This is a seven hundred point squad, but with favorable psychotroke rolls it will blow through anything in CC.

Saturday I took the counterattack grand strategy and absorbed the charge from 5 kitted out Twolves and a Wolf Lord.

Rolled a '2' for trokes and absolutely demolished them with S6 at I6.

Assuming that it works in reserves. I honestly can't see why it wouldn't, but there's a precedent for stuff in reserves being passive until they're on the board. If it truly works that way I'll probably keep the terminators.

I've been using him as a gunner. I give him a cannon a cannon. Then I have him running solo hiding behind an advancing razorback. When the razorback's guys get out, or are shot out, he joins that squad. Give the squad a place to put AP wounds without losing whole models, and makes that unit really scary for the opponent to assault. A had a full BA assault squad attack my strike squad with him joined, and over 3 cc turns he killed every model (with little help from from the strikes)

Yes, I seriously doubt this ability works in reserve because it isn't passive. That causes several problems

1. How can a unit not even in play take a psychic test
2. If it fails with a perils of the warp, how can a unit not even in play make a save or take wounds
3. Keeping psykers in reserve and letting them use abilities would render hoods completely useless

non the less a 4+ is not horrible.

I think this issue in part adds to the logic behind for the Mordak "Alpha" love coupled with interceptors / DK's ... at least for me.

Just saying, I can't think of any other psychic power that would work when in reserves, as pretty much every power there is requires you to either target something or to measure from the psyker. Psychic communion only has a "meta-effect" so to speak, and as such doesn't require range to anything.

As an added bonus opinion, psychic communion working while in reserves makes sense fluff-wise!
