I was reading in the faq's a little bit ago and saw somewhere that it said you can take drop pods by themselves. Am I reading that right ? And if so, does this mean I can take any dedicated transport by it self ? This my seem obvious but help me out

It means that you don't have to deploy the unit that bought the drop pod in it, and it can be deployed on its own, not that you can buy them without a unit.

Do they have to be deployed at the same time? Ie. the drop pod is in reserves, but the troops that bought it are on the board?

They are two separate units so you can deploy the marines and Deep strike the Drop pod.

You can do any of the following:
1) Deploy the troops on the field and reserve the pods.
2) Reserve the troops and drop pod separately; bringing the troops on from your table edge, and dropping the pod
3) Reserve the troops in the pod dropping the pod on the table and disembarking the troops from it.
4) Reserve the troops and drop pod separately; prepare the troops in a non-dedicated transport(land Raider), then drop the pod and bring the troops in the other transport on from the table edge.

They can deploy separate; Dedicated transports can only deploy holding the squads that purchased them(plus any ICs) or empty.

Another common tactic would be taking, say, 7 Drop Pods, 4 of which would come in first turn. The three units that bought the other Drop Pods are deployed regularly so that first turn you have 4 in-your-face units as well as the rest of the army (minus the 3 Drop Pods) on the table.
