new to the game, and just want to get something cleared up... i use high elves so ill use their spearmen troop as my example. Equiped with both a hand weapon AND a sheild along with ligth armour and a spear, so my question is does the spearmen unit recive a 5+ armour with a 6+ parry save in the front rank using handweapons and sheilds while the suporting rank and file use spears? or is it decided at the beggining of combat whether the entire unit is using HW+Sh for the better save or the spears for the additional rank and file supporting attacks?

Your Spearmen have a 5+ armour save and nothing else. You can't choose whether or not you use spears or HW, you automatically use the "special weapon." and the whole unit will always use the same weapons (excepting characters)

1) All models in the unit use the same weapon, unless they have *explicit* permission to do otherwise
2) Spears are "special" CCW, and so must be used in preference to a hand weapon.
