Full disclosure: I'll admit this is the only way I'll ever use a Thunderwolf or Saga of the Hunter so I want it to work. But at the same time I can't seem to fault my logic and my gaming group seems to agree. I wanted to see what you guys think though (first time poster, long time lurker).

Since this question is not answered in the Space Wolves FAQ I turn to the Orks FAQ for help:
Q. If a Boyz mob exchange sluggas and choppas
with shootas, can a Nob take a power klaw or a
big choppa?

A. You may upgrade the Nob to have a big
choppa or power klaw before you choose to
upgrade the mob to have shootas, in which case
the Nob is not affected by the mob’s weapon
swap (as he no longer has a choppa to swap),
does not receive a shoota and keeps his slugga
and power klaw/big choppa instead. He is a lot
happier that way!

This means wargear can be purchased "out of order". By that I mean you don't have to just go down the list and take things as you come across them, you can jump around. If you have access to the Ork Codex the reason for this becomes more clear. The reason for this clarification in the Ork FAQ is so that you can take a Power Klaw/Big Choppa on a Nob in a mob of Shoota Boyz. If you had to take options as you worked down the list you'd end up being unable to take a Big Choppa or PK as the Nob wouldnt' have any Choppa to replace.

So if I follow that logic I think the following would work:

Saga of the Hunter stipulates the following before going into any fluff or function:
Infantry Only.

Also, in the Army List itself, there is the following additional stipulation:
May only be taken by a model in Power Armor that does not have a Jump Pack or Space Marine Bike.

Those are the only mentions what so ever about restrictions regarding Saga of the Hunter, as written in the Space Wolves Codex.

So since the FAQ & Errata for Orks can affect other armies (like how Dark Angels' FAQ regarding empty Drop Pods affects other Space Marines and possibly Tyranids) doesn't this work:

1. Purchase Wolf Guard Battle Leader
2. Give the WGBL Saga of the Hunter while he is still an Infantry model.
3. Give the WGBL a Thunderwolf Mount, changing his type to Cavalry.
4. Profit.

Or does the RAW for Saga of the Hunter mean that while that would work for purchasing the Saga, you'd be unable to actually use it?

Seems a shame for such a useless Saga to exist. The only real current benefit is to have a WGBL go Behind Enemy Lines with a Wolf Scout pack. It'd also be incredibly fluffy (insomuch as Thunderwolves are fluff; not too big on them myself as a unit) and fun to have a model like this that worked but I have my doubts. What are all of your opinions? I know a lot of people will probably just knee-jerk to a bit No! but I'm hoping you all will rethink it real quick before saying so.

Yes and no; the Battle leader can take a mount and the saga(no rules against that), but the infantry only before the rules+Fluff means that only infantry models can benefit from it. So if you want to waste the 10 points for a useless ability, go ahead.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

As above.

"Infantry only" means only infantry benefit.

Shoot. Thought I was on to something there.

So then Saga of the Hunter is only good for:

A) Conferring the Stealth USR to a unit or
B) Outflanking a solo IC (preferably with two Fenrisan Wolves as wound soak) or
C) OBEL with a Wolf Scout Pack

Is that correct?

Although, I admit the thought of throwing Storm Caller on a large Blood Claw Pack lead by a Wolf Priest with Saga of the Hunter to rock a 4+ Cover Save in the open is appealing. Just a shame that (unless elevated) the Long Fangs behind the BC Pack would be dealing with an opponent's 4+ save on vehicles for shooting through one of my units (if I'm mistaken on that please let me know, its killing me that I have to expose my Tankbustas or throw them in a transport).
