Always wanted to do an army focused on just night goblins... but would an army like that even "work"?

I would only be using night goblin characters to lead it, units of night goblins (a couple big blocks (30-40?) with spears and smaller ones of 20 bows maybe with fanatics for all, and squig hoppers & herds. I know that's pretty limiting especially with all the other great units in the book.

Would I be better off making it just a "goblins" army, but using night goblin models? I wouldn't mind some spider riders and of course the new ginormous one.. icky spiders live in caves, right?

Just looking for some ideas/thoughts.. would it be worth doing, or would a gobin-only or night-goblin-only army be really tough to play?

Night goblins work, especially in 8th. We were fun but uncompetitive in 7th edition now we can put up a good fight.

The focus on big blocks is great. Where other armies take 20 models we can happily take 60. Characters are less of a threat and we are much more likely to hold.

NG armies can abuse the percentage system. I can comfotably fit a decent character in each unit using just 25% of my total. This gives the units a nice bonus and might mean they actually kill something. The Warmachines are great, they aren't much worse than normal ones but much cheaper, its very easy to max out on bolt throwers or doom divers. Being able to take lots of cheap squig suicide units is fun.

I would reccommend using NG units where possible to keep the theme then add in a few normal units painted as NG just because and army of just NG units can be a bit dull.

My NG army uses NG infantry and characters, squigs, Goblin warmachines, and giants. You could probably get away with trolls, spider units giants and warmachines without loosing the theme. Just try and model them as if they belong in a cave.

Just try and take everying in excess, NG work ny rolling a lot of dice, being able to fight is a bonus.

You may want to include some NG with bows aswell, i've seen them do well. They are not much worse than other archers but a lot cheaper and can still fight (and die) in combat if neccessary.

P.s. never leave home without fanatics, they are great fun and the idea your unit might contain them can really put people off charging your NG.

Cool thanks for the info.. for big blocks do you do them 10 wide for hordes? or are they better 5 wide and going deep?

The only thing I'm worried about a little is the low LD. I would probably want a character in each unit. I was also planning on at least 1 unit of 20 bows & a fanatic, and set them up as a screen when I can. A friend is selling a huge orc army so I was thinking about grabbing most of his goblin stuff.. he has something like 150 or so night goblins alone...

For my fighty units I go 10 wide 4 deep, i'm not the most tacical person but for me getting as many gobbos in combat and the horde bonus seemed to make sense.

The low Ld isn't such a problem- having characters in all units and making them big reduces the chance of them failing enough that it isn't a problem. Since you will be hitting blocks of 20 enemies with 40+ NG you won't be taking tests that often. This after softening them up with lots of warmachine and bow fire. Once they are in comabt with a big block getting the flank charges is easy and you should easily have enoough units.

Talked with my friend who's selling his orcs, gonna be getting something like 130 night goblins, 3 shamans and 1 boss, 9 metal fanatics and 5 metal netters for like $130.. also seeing if he still has his spider riders and rock lobbas available, I figured I could convert them to squiglobbas

I figured maybe I could go with a cave spidery theme so I also have an excuse to get the new big spider too. I think I'd probably do that with the gobbos on the back instead of a shaman mount though. Kinda makes me worry though that it'll be just like a carnosaur or stegadon, where every enemy cannon blows it to bits before it can ever do anything...

I'm doing this exact thing. Other than Night Goblin and Squig units, I've decided to use the following:

  • Spider riders (with the forest goblin models replaced with Night Goblins from Skull pass)

  • The Arachnorok (the mother of cave spiders)

  • Trolls (cave trolls)

  • Spear chukkas with Night Goblin crew, etc.

cool.. yeah I was looking at the spear chuckas but I thought it would be more fun(ny) to have squiglobbas.

I'd like to have mangler squigs too if anything just for fluff, no idea how to model them since there aren't really too many big squig models. Guess I could try sculpting my own some day if I really want to, or just hope GW or FW will make em... got an idea of a giant squig running by with the old night goblin fanatic who's up in the air added on like being pulled along behind outta control
