Hi guys! Having lurked on dakka for a while, I have decided to jump into the deep end by starting a painting blog. I'll be documenting my Space Marine Battle Company, and the slow process of building an Imperial Guard infantry army with limited funds

Without further ado, here is my first Space Marine:


Here he is from the side. I plan on touching up the paint job, but the macro lens on my camera picks up everything! :/ you can't really see the paint blotches etc with actual eyes.

From the front. He is missing an arm, but I plan to do that after i have painted the torso.

Any improvements on him? C&C welcome

Anyhoo, I have an update. I have now adjusted my colour scheme towards the more codex version, and I have completed my captain and tactical squad. Enjoy:

Do you guys have any suggestions as to names for my captain?

Over The weekend, I picked up some of the new Grey knights as I love the models. More importantly, all five can be armed with double handed weapons. Double handed weapons = Relic Blades = Honour Guard

They look good, but you need to de-Knight them a lot more.
And from a gaming perspective, I think you should give the Champion a Thunder Hammer instead of a Power weapon/Relic Blade and CCW.

Thanks, I was going to cover up/file off most of the iconography. And yeah, the chapter champ is probably better off with a thunder hammer, I was thinking about that just after I built him ><

Just a small update for you guys, here is my WIP honour guard with relic blade:

Do you think that white is the right colour for the handle?
What colour should I paint the stormbolter casing?

The shaft is too white.. same with the shoulder pad. What's more, I can't even make out the red. Well, nowhere near enough anyway. I suggest a brown/red shaft.

Storm Bolter needs to contrast, so I'd paint it.. gun metal perhaps? With gold rounds.

To be honest, I don't like the white on that model. Don't take that the wrong way; white is one of the hardest colours to paint.

Oh ok, I see what you mean about the White. Dyou reckon I should work the White up from a bone colour? And sorry about the picture, the sun didnt want to come out after I got home from school :/

I'm no expert, but I know there's a certain style that starts off with various greys and works up.. it was on Terminator Crux's, but hey, it might work.

Although, I don't particularly like the white. It might be better to experiment with bone-ish colours for veteran helmets, a la Blood Raven veterans.

@Darkvoidof40k I already use grey, and I'll try your bone suggestion for the helmet on my sternguard, as soon as I get the honour guard out of the way

It looks pretty good. The first pictures don't look like you're thinning your whites enough though. Maybe it's just the way it's showing up in the pictures. I like the combat squad the best.

@Saruus I have learned how to paint white properly over the past few weeks, and thin paints is the way to go!

Anyway, I have another mini - update today.
I've completed my first honour guard (yay!) and he is ready to be based. Sorry for the blurry pics, my camera is refusing to work properly

I want to have quite a competitive army as well as an army that just looks good. Unforntunately this means that I wont be able to use the brilliant vanguard veteran models .
I'll be constructing at least 2000 pts of SoO, based around drop pods, dreads and sternguard, with a librarian to gate around my sternguard for extra giggles. Other than that, i'd happily take suggestions from both painting and gaming perspectives

Awesome painting. I would, however, remove the SB from the Chapter Champion.

I like the sword, but I think the lightning needs to blend more. It gets bright too quickly; tone it down a bit.. the blue needs to extend further; the lightning has to be white at the penultimate and ultimate extent of the blade.

Maybe try something like this on some spare weapons (admit it; you have loads! ) and then experiment and improve or change it as you see fit as you become more experienced with the technique:




I also think you should consider gold as the helmet/trim colour, a la Blood Angels. I reckon it'd be more aesthetically pleasing, a better contrast, easier to paint and look nicer than the white.

Oh, so golden helmets and trims? I will try that, but I don't want to deviate too much from the codex colour scheme.
