Witch of the listed sci-fi universes by it's story and background equal, better or worse in comparisson to Warhammer 40000?

And one more question? Who do you think, out of all listed, has force to reckon with 40k races?

( For example, I think that Replicators and Ori from Stargate preset a substencial threat to 40k races. Also apply for Reapers from Mass Effect, in my opinion )

Here are some pictures to see:

40k, easily, possibly the most expansive out there, yes we have a scope of the entire universe but it is one where both the fluff and the really unknown alien races, and even those we do know, never cease to amaze us.

Starcraft should not receive a single vote IMO, considering blizzard wanted to produce 40k stuff, and GW wouldn't let them and smacked em with a lawsuit. And thats how starcraft was born.

Star wars has the best story by a long shot, in depth characters and a whole mess of species to bring out variety within the universe. Even its 'evil overlords' have enough personality and justification in their methods to make them fairly understandable; looking at Thrawn and the Yuuzhan Vong leaders here. In addition, alot of the stuff is fairly consistent and has few retcons, considering the sheer amount of story it has.

Being a mad-fan. i would have to say Star Wars. if you loko at the Expanded Universe (including canon novels, games, movies etc) it's background is amazingly immersive and, IMHO vastly outstrips even 40k.

Not gonna stop me readng 40k books though.

I'm just annoyed that no one shoots the Federation officer depite the fact he/she will talk them out of doing whatever evil deed they are doing.

You never played Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST and Reach?

I played only first 2 parts and the game was EPIC. Didn't play later games because I am supporter for "shooters only for PC".

OP I see that SW is going well, I didn't doubt that - Lukas made just to damn good galaxy for us to enjoy .

On moon miranda.

In terms of just plain consistently awesome, immersive SciFi? Mass Effect.

Babylon 5 was also awesome, I'm rewatching season 3 right now. Star Trek isn't bad, but also highly mary-sue, though I did like DS9's darker tone.

Halo is...well...it's warporn.

Star Wars was cool as a kid, but the 3 newer movies took a lot out of it and it doesn't seem as awesome at 24 as it did at 8. Maybe that's also oversaturation however.

Dr. Who I've never really been in to.

Stargate was watchable, but also highly mary-sue, merely "eh".

Aliens and Predators stuff is awesome (except the AvP movies, especially the toilet wipe of a movie that was Requiem, I didn't even pay to see it and I feel cheated) but quite limited.

Starcraft is well...let's be honest, it wouldn't exist without 40k. It, like 40k, is Space Fantasy with a more anime/movie feel than 40k.

40k however has some of the most expansive and interesting background of anything around. The game wouldn't exist without its background, lets be honest, this hobby is sustained by it and little else. While there's some rather truly awful 40k fluff, especially in the last 3-5 years, there's also some truly excellent stuff. I can't think of another IP with something that has managed to portray a faction as dark and terrible, yet admirable and tragic, as the fall of the Chaos Space Marine Legions. They exhibit the worst behaviors and commit the most unspeakable acts imagineable, yet are also driven, capable, confident, and willing to sacrifice all they are in pursuit of their goals. They are humanity at both their best and their worst.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

After reading, I'm going to go for 40k, closely followed by Halo. I love the Halo games, and the backround is pretty good, but its scale doesn't come close to 40K

Mass Effect gets my vote. As Vaktathi put it, the games managed to create an incredibly immersive world from scratch. And before anybody starts, yeah, shoulders of giants yada, yada, yada...

While I love 40K's fluff I'm kind of disappointed that the game world has been in stasis for years.

My only other real complaint about 40K's fluff is that info on your average imperial citizen's life isn't nearly accessable as many of the other options listed. Mass Effect, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Babylon 5 all give at least some insight into what civilian life might be like in their respective societies, 40K comes up short in this regard. I realize that 40K, being a tabletop wargame and not a medium made strictly for consumption has to limit its scope or risk get bogged down in minutia but I think that ignoring how the vast majority (I'm assuming, at least) of the human population lives means that I don't have the completeness that the other universes offer. I can understand why it's never been fleshed out, at least in the rulebooks and codexes, but I don't have to pick up expanded universe material in any other sci-fi genre/game I play to hear what the majority of the population does with its time. /mini-rant over

Unfortunately the only universe I'm familiar with other than 40k is Star Trek, but just barely. And I prefer 40k anyway. Love the atmosphere, love the races, love the insane grimdarkness. Dan Abnett and Sandy Mitchell write the best EU books, IMO.

definitely not 40k, its just a copy and paste of several different backgrounds written by people with actual shreds of talent, with SPESS MAHREENS thrown in for good measure

personally I wouldn't vote for any of the above sci-fi settings, I'd go with battletech, that thing oozes background, and yes I know they take allot of background inspired by reality or history, its different to just ripping off other writers and calling it your own original BS

In an up fight 40k vs any sci-fi game/movie/tv show, 40k would win but thats not the point of this thread.
I voted for mass effect. I love the game and it makes me care about the characters. hell it even inspired me to do alot more active stuff. Mass Effect has more badder enemies and not tank sized empires like 40k, and darker setting.
Mass effect has a lighter mood in some parts which i love.
40k is my runner up of course
after 40k is firefly. Because Serenity was too bad ass of a movie.
