Sloan's battlegroup looks solid. The gun mages are ok, though I would give them a shooty jack to marshall.

Why are you marshalling ironclad with the swordknights? You don't get much out of the flank bonus without reach jack. The combo costs 15 points with which you could use much better with giving the gun mages a hunter or defender and running the swordknights as a cheap meat wall.

By dropping the SK UA and switching the ironclad to hunter you have 3 points available and by dropping one of the scattergunners you would have enough to add Aiyanna & Holt, which would increase your damage potential.

That looks better, if you run that list give me a shout how the firefly performs. I proxied it once in same role you have it and it got trashed really early. The opponent run beast heavy eThag list though and that small jack is in wrong company when Typhon comes calling.

I'd think Stormblades + UA+ WA with Stormclad would be better than Sword Knights in a Kara list, since Kara can buff their shooting and they hit very hard.

Of course they would hit harder, they also cost 19 points compared to the 13 that the swordknights +UA and firefly cost. But their purpose is also completely different, the swordknights are only a speed bump and stormblades are there to do the heavy lifting. That change would change the whole nature of this list.

Compare to his original setup (15 pts in totall, so 3 pts more), it's not as much of an increase and does more overall.
Ofcourse, like you said, its all about what you want the unit to do.

I was looking for a way to fit in all the other Cygnar units I wanted to buy into a list (Sword Knights, Gun Mages, Trencher Commandos). The Jacks and solos were added in to fill out the list.

I do like the Stormblades + Stormclad, but I use that in my Siege list. It's defiantly an option ill keep in mind.

And that's the problem overall with Sloan is she plays so much like Siege and pHaley except they do the everything better than she does.
