I saw this question come up when I was lurking elsewhere and I couldn't find a thread in YMDC when I searched...

In the BRB it states "[When it is] ... impossible to move assaulting models into base-to-base contact with the unit they wish to assault ... it is perfectly acceptable to place models as close to their foe as is safely possible, including the level below or above, providing that you place the models as close as possible to their opponents and you make it clear to your opponent which models are in base contact with which models."

So I don't need to be able to place my Daemon Prince or Hive Tryant into base contact to assault up a level? Or does this just apply to "normal" models like Infantry etc? Just be within 2 inches or so of the bottom of the model? I don't know I think I remember it working this way but I am a little hazzy on how it works tbh. Any help or a point in the right direction for another thread answering this is much appreciated.

It works just as it is stated in the rules. If you can't fit the model you place it as close as possible, you must however have rolled high enough for difficult terrain to have made it up the level. IIRC monstrous creatures can't assault up levels in terrain, or maybe that is just Cavalry. Don't have the brb atm so I will have to check that for accuracy.

MCs are fine going up levels in ruins. Beasts and Cavalry cannot however.

Ok that's good about the MCs. But what about my regular models. If I can't fit at least ONE model in b2b with a model in the unit that is entirely on the 2nd level can I still assault it or not?

Nos is correct Bryan. Were you by any chance lurking on Game Empire Pasadenas forums? I just noticed this exact question was posted on there so I responded there as well.
