Hi. I'm sorry, this has probably been posted.
I did do a search!
Simple: Can bikes be stood without bases? They don't need 'em, and measuring to the bike itself isn't that bad, is it?

You must use the base that the Model came with(or a larger one with your opponent's consent).
That said; if your bikes did not come with bases(as is the case with 3 of my Wife's Ork warbikes); then you clearly do not need the bases with them(I went out and bought some bases for them, and mounted them on bases anyways).

Yeah, the bike has a solid enough footprint that it functions ok without one. Better than the Defiler does...
Technically, they should have bases if they came with one... but enough bikes have been sold over the years without bases that nobody is likely to question it.
Having said that, they fit into the rest of the army better if they are based, and ar less prone to falling over.

Another voice in the chorus. You can technically do it if they didn't come with any, and it really doesn't cause serious problems in the game.
But they look nicer, are more stable, fit in better with the army, and are easier to use/measure to for assaults (etc.) if you put them on bases. I base all of mine, despite many of them being old models which didn't come with them.

I'd get into trouble for it at a tournament, though?

Not necessarily. At a tournament it always comes down to the organizer, so if you're not sure, touch base (no pun intended) with them ahead of time. But it shouldn't be a problem. If it ever becomes a question during a game, just being willing to call a borderline measurement in your opponent's favor will probably erase any difficulties.

Yeah, unless you have a TO who is particularly stickley over the rules, it shouldn't really be an issue. If you want to make sure of it, just run it past them before the event... 'Hey, my bikes don't have bases. Is that a problem?' or something to that effect.
I've had to do just that myself for an upcoming event, as I have my Ork bikes and Kans on 60mm round bases, and my Nobs on 30mm ones. The TO in this case wasn't at all concerned about it.

What about an official event, like a GW event.

Again: it is up to the TO. There is no GW tournament policy on basing that I have ever found

I've seen an event held at a GW-store banning the use of any named characters. Not much you can do about random stuff like that.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

All my bikes do not have bases and i never ahd any problems, just specify that you will mesure the range from the front of the bike (that will disadvantage you sine the base would give you a little bit more range) and usually people that are nor TFG will accept.
