Alright,

So I was pondering this as I plan on doing an army of pure deep striking units and I started to wonder if I'm going to be able to play it the way that I'm thinking, or if things are going to cause problems. Here are some querries that I'm not completely sure of.

I have a Strike Squad 10 men strong that I want to combat squad and have 2 squads of 5. The decision to make a squad a combat squad is done at Deployment, Grand Strategy is said to be done before deployment, and Deep Strikes are rolled after initial deployment... so, my questions.

1. If I give a Strategy to the unit (Counter - Attack, Scout, etc...) Does it go to all 10? Or do I have to choose which 5 get it? There has been debate at my LGS but I'm almost positive the entire squad gets it because they're not deployed yet and technically I give them the strategy before I decide to combat squad them.

2. When I roll for them from reserves, do I split them and have to roll seperately for each 5 man squad.. or do they drop as one squad and only as I deep strike I roll them to scatter seperately? I think on this one I have to roll for both 5 - man squads, but technically they don't combat squad until AFTER they are deployed?? No? Maybe I'm mis-reading the rules on this one.. as I don't have my book. Before the game starts I have to declare they're combat squading? Or do I do that after I get them from reserves?

1. You are correct in that Grand Strategy is given before any kind of deployment including combat squading.

2. You can combat squad them before hand but you have to roll for them separately if you do so it's more beneficial to do it when they come down especially if you're playing annihilation and want to keep them together. The only time you cannot combat squad before hand is if you want to start one on the table and one in reserve as thats not allowed such as having a razor on while the squad it was dedicated to off or vice versa.

1) All 10 get it, as at the time you allocate GS the unit is still whole
2) You CANNOT combat squad in reserve. This is because reserves is "instead of deploying" and, as you note, Combat Squad is ON deployment.

When you put them in reserve, they are a single unit, so you make ONE reserves roll

You then decide to split, if you want, and if so place the marker models in 2 places, anywehere on there board.
