Got my copy yesterday... Stunning book, even better than Blackpowder and the rules look excellent.

Looking forward to trying them out in a Greeks versus Persians battle over easter!

The base size is 40mm square, isn't it?

The game works around unit size - for example a large infantry unit is between 160 and 200mm (decide with your opponent how to set unit size). Within the unit, figures can be on any sized base.

Epic fail! Did Rick forget everything he learned at GW? The correct price for a book of this quality is £48 not £30. At this price people will buy it and play games with it, fool!

That should work with standard WRG base sizes.

Agree. Basing doesn't really matter in the game as there is no casualty removal. Units receive casualty markers and after receiving six count as disrupted or something like that. Once you fail a leadership test after being disrupted, the unit it completely removed.

The mechanics take quite a bit from warmaster, with multiple moves possible per unit based on a 2d6 roll.

Units are small, medium, and large, with players agreeing on what number of models makes up which. I think the typical large unit is 24 models.

If it is like Black Powder, there are no points values for armies or army lists. The game leaves it up to the players to select forces and play games/scenarios. It has rules for types of units, and some special rules that you can apply to units. Its not a tournament set, and its not even really a 'pick up game' type of ruleset. In Black Powder, they did give you a formula if you really wanted to figure out points, but its not the focus of the game.

I am afraid that basing is something to consider.

units can adept different formations ( like wedge, tesudo, swinehead tec,. ) so basing all models on 1 big base won't be very helpfull.
By keeping the mdoels as close to the standard WAB basing sizes you can use your models for both sets.
The only thing is that WAB favors small fronts an ranks while Hail Ceasar has more realistic formations ( wider )

If it doesn't hurt
it doesn't count

Basing matters because the width of units is a very important variable on a battlefield, due to the amount of frontage covered. The majority of ancients rules stick with the WRG base widths, which means that the majority of armies are based for WRG. This makes them all compatible with different rules as long as base depth and number of figures per base are not crucial.

It sounds as if these rules will be compatible with standard WRG bases, which is good news for people like me who have six armies based for WRG.

I could live with that. Historical battles were almost never fought on fair terms.

In fact, the point of being a general is to bias the battle towards your own side as much as you can.

I think we are going to see more list support for Hail Caesar than for BP. The Yahoo group already has army notes (can't really call them army lists) posted by Rick. There also seems to be a list set in the works - either as a follow up book or for publication online.
