There is no exact science to it. Like all things painting, it's an art. Some batches of paint need more, some need none, most need some.
Play around with varying amounts. For me, the average "off the shelf" paint requires about 2:1 paint to water. That being said, I add 5-10 drops of 10:1 water:flo aid mix to every bottle of paint when I buy them, as well as 3 or 4 drops of slo-dri. I find with some paints I still have to thin them out, and others I have to thicken up with a little matte medium(which then means more coats as it will thin out the pigment %).
