Hi there everyone. A few friends more or less talked me into getting back to 40k. We played some about 15 years ago and now just gonna play for fun against them.
I need some help with forming an army that is:
*Fun
*"Cool"-looking
*Balanced
*500 - 1000p-ish
It doesn't have to be the best possible army. I don't want to face-roll my friends every time and the same time i don't want to them to utterly destroy me every time. My friends are playing CSM and SM. The SM player atleast is very 'heavy' (terminators/dreadnaughts/tanks) and don't tend to use sheer numbers, i think the CSM player is the same (atleast he's working on a LR atm).

I'm going to paint the army aswell (utter newbie on that) so currently i'm working my way up from termagants.

All i have right now is 12 termangants (3 done with fleshborers, 1 wip with fleshborer, so there are 8 more that can have spikerifle/spinefists/fleshborers)
1 Ripperswarm.
So where do i go from here?
I thinking getting some hormagants after i painted the termagants and after that a few tyranid warriors. I haven't seen a lot of lists using a lichtor, they look neat so i probably want to squeeze one in somehow. It's not a problem if the army-list is somewhat 'illegal' when starting up (atleast if not too 'illegal') since we are all basicly getting units that are fun to paint at the moment and not getting units from a set army-list.

You need an HQ! At 1,000 points only a prime or tervigon are the real options. Prime is based on a warrior and tervigon is an extended carnifex.

Yea, i know i need a HQ. Will get a Warrior squad after hormagants.
So it basicly will look like:
12 Termagants
1 Ripper swarm
12 Hormagants
3 Tyranid warrior (1 will serve as Prime)
That transition is due to painting my way up to 'more advanced' units
But where do i go from there?

I started out my Tyranid army years ago ....with a hive tyrant. It looks cool. It punches stuff. It whips stuff so that it can punch it first. Then it has psychic powers so it can punch stuff and they can't punch it back. It's also a good throwing weight for when you are up against TFG.

And as if this was not awesome enough, you can get a giant cannon with S6 large blasts to go with it. You wound MEQ on 2 and plague marines on a 3 and it pins!

Get a tyrant and a tyrant guard, abuse cover rules and having ablative wounds, then abuse paroxysm and leech. Then abuse your opponent.

As far as things in my current army that I think look cool and are useful: Trygons, 2x TL Brainleech devourer carnifexes, hive guard, zoanthropes, termagants with devourers (or fleshborer + toxin + adrenals! 180 points gets you up to 60 4+ poison attacks at I5....AFTER shooting the equivalent of 30 bolt pistol rounds at the target! And they're cute!) Venomthropes are a wonderful tyranid specii that gives your MCs 5+ cover, defensive grenades, and cause opponents to take dangerous terrain tests when they assault effected units! Not to mention the fact that they have tentacles! Everyone loves tentacles!
