On a hate rampage.

They're pretty pricey, and you have to be quite a good player to live them up to their full potential.
Despite that, I'd say they make a decent starter army, as they are generally over powered anyway

The way I chose my first army was by what looked coolest..

Be prepared for potentially weathering flak from people who accuse you of bandwagon jumping.

DrownedRat117 has the right approach. Pick the army whose look and background most appeal to you. It'll probably be the main motivator to keep you painting and gaming. Especially if you lose your first few games.

Overpowered in what way?

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

If you're going with Citadel paints (not a bad place to start) spray basecoat them black, then give them a coat of Chainmail. Drybrush on a highlight of Mithril Silver, then give them a light blue wash, then an even lighter black wash. That's if you want to go for the 'classic' silver look. Accent colours are reds and creams, with a little gold for detailing. That would be my advice.

Yup, that would work too if you wanted a darker look. I've never used Vallejo paints myself because I'm an old stick in the mud who hates to change his ways, but I hear good things. A lot of the best painters I've seen use Vallejo, so you probably can't go wrong.

Interceptor Squads are fast attack, cost a bit more, move as jump infantry and can make a special shunt move once per game. The backpacks are the difference, Interceptors have the teleporter packs with the rod thingies.

How do you figure them to be pricey?

Less Model = Less Money.

If you're not above buying things online, you can get a 1,500 pts army for less than 200U$... I'm not saying the army will be competitive, but it'll work in friendly game for sure and it's just about as cheap as it gets for 1,500 pts.

I wouldn't recommend it. People say it's OP etc. etc. but I find that hardly true, there is some nasty things in the codex, and is strong in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing, but for a beginner, it's all too tempting to make armies of only 7-8 overpowered super men in 1500 points, only to be blasted away by those 3 Leman Russes while you deal with the hordes of men in your way.

I'd recommend regular marines to begin with, it seems a lot of the advantages that marines have (superior stats, saves etc.) that allow for mistakes are negated heavily by the fact you have such a low model count, making mistakes quite costly.

after using GKs i can definitly say they arn't OP and actually take a fair amount of skill to use to their fullest.

that said, they are still a Marine army and are easier then others to pick up. they are more forgiving of mistakes as well.

they do suffer from the downsides of a MEQ army more then others(low numbers mainly)

if you like the fluff, go for GKs. they are a fun army with perhaps the best looking models GW has ever produced.

I do a chaos black basecoat followed by boltgun metal and mithril silver highlights. I then wash heavily with asurmen blue and re-highlight edges etc. with mithril silver. It gives a nice blue-greyish tone that I'm pleased with. Not technically "Grey Knights", but still Grey enough to be recognized.

the old metals seem to have gone up in price quite badly recently! they are becoming popular on ebay

as for Grey Knights, if thats the army you like the feel of go for it, play what you like best

I painted mine in a similar way to Almighty, but instead of blue wash I devlan mudded them and re highlighted the edges/picked up the writing in gold/bronze.
Gave them a gritter feel which I liked

Will prob post up some photos when I have finished them!

This is a good technique. I painted a GK termie (that I never finished before I bartered it =( ) with a similar scheme, but i laid down Midnight Blue on the piping on the back of the legs, and in between armour plates in like the elbow and knee and hip joints with the idea of highlighting it with ice blue. It looked very cool and unique. I think any technique that uses a strong tertiary colour in the piping and joints will add a lot of flavour to the otherwise monochromatic GK scheme.

i do a heavy drybrush of Boltgun metal with Brazen Brass for the inset lettering. Mithril Silver trim as well.

Purity seals are done with Scab red over both the seal and parchment. the Parchment is then done over with Bleached bone. the seal gets highlighted with blood red.

eye lenses are done in enchanted blue.

the result is a very crisp looking armor that isn't annoyingly silver colored.

My gallery has a GK dred painted with the scheme.
