I have recently i have been thinking of starting a Necron army but I thought about it and wondered if I should just wait for the new rules as if I tailor a list that suits the current rules (Not that I have much selection) and then the new codex comes out and my army becomes redundant then it will be a waste of time and money. Also what is the best way to start a necron army as well as the battle force? Please respond.

Its called sarcasm. Really what does it taste like?

Don't think you need to wait for the new Codex mate.
You can start out by getting some Necron Warriors or a Monolith as those models won't get expired and switched out. The Battle Force is actually a pretty good buy so if you get that assembled and painted i think you are prepared for the new codex as Necron Warriors will probably still be an essential force in Necron 5ed army

Given that Necrons have been waiting this side of forever for a codex, and might yet be waiting a while (rumors have been wrong before, with every year having its crop of New Necron Codex rumor threads ) I would at least collect some of the basics.

Warriors are unlikely to be redone, as they are decent sculpts in plastic.

Destroyers ditto, but they may be redone eventually. I like the current sculpts.

A lord with a warscythe and orb will likely be key regardless of the codex, though the gear may change function when the new codex eventually drops.. Who knows

I can't see the Monolith changing much in look, though they may make it easier to assemble if they redo the kit.

It's a bit hard to tell, without a new codex showing the new models.

warriors and destroyers will never become redundant. They are too iconic. Ditto Monoliths. The rest is up to the codex guys

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

I would wait...definatly, wait.

You've got NO idea what the new codex is going to do/offer. There might be some sort of upgrade sprue new and included with warrior box sets...look at how the codexes are going now with multiple units able to be made off of the same sprue. (DE warriors, Grey Knights, GK terminators)

Just wait...there's no rush is there?

If it was me, I'd buy 1-2 Battleforces beforehand. The Necron Battleforce is currently the best points-for-pounds value of all Battleforces, and I bet GW is going to screw that up once preorders start. Worst case scenario, both Warriors and Destroyers get recut sprues, but you almost certainly will be able to get good use out of your pile of cheap plastics, even if you're using the new models for upgrades.

The only thing that's certain is that Warriors will still remain the bread and butter unit of the Necrons. However Destroyers will likely get either recut (at best) or completely redone (at worst) for the new codex, as it's just not economical selling them singularly (we might see something akin to the Killa Kanz boxset). Some rumors point to how there will be new vehicles, which might make the monolith obsolete due to it's high cost.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I had to make the same decisions: I've bought 2x battleforces, a monolith, and every necron lord sculpt currently available.

Warriors will be used no matter what. about half of them are done, the rest will be conversion material if there are no new boxes for the formel elite slot models.

with the HQ's I'm going to magnetize them anyway.. but after the next codex.

Til then, I play with my deceiver, ( not that competitive, but, who cares...)

Honestly, I agree with the others. Stock up on models via battleforces.

As for rules; well instead of playing you could just get your force painted up nicely in time for the new rules; or you could have a go at some games. Necrons are very powerful at low-point games, believe it or not. Anything like 750 points and less, it's hard to match their firepower, and if you have a Lord with a resurrection orb, you should do fine once you get the feel of the codex.

Or, alternatively, play using a fandex. There's quite a few out there, including one I have made myself (should you wish to check it out, it has its own thread on Dakka), which, provided you could find willing opponents, might make an easier task of playing with Necrons.

Yeah thanks for all the responses. I think I will stock up on models build some try out a few games and if there are new redos for al units then hey i can always convert them. Also no one is gonna stop me using old models anyway. Thanks again for the responses!

Hmmm... The new codex will apparently be out by August. I would wait till the update, and perhaps buy certain units while waiting - I doubt GW will update models like the Flayed Ones and Warriors, and the Monolith, so you could buy some of those and paint them up, which could hopefully help you to last till the new codex.
