I've been glancing at epic 40k on and off for a while now, but with the rules being free its been harder and harder to ignore it.

How does the game play out? Namely thinking of Eldar and Imperial Guard.
Are the balanced enough to have average battles against each other?

Epic is awesome! Far better than 40k especially if you like a balance and tactical game. Taccoms it the best place on the web to get into Epic! There are lists for just about any army (Playtested and balanced) like Titan Legions, Grot Hordes, Sister of Battle and much much more. Epic is alive and running at full steam!

Both have variant balanced lists. But the Core ones are good too. Its fun to field a Tank Company, a horde of Infantry and a Titan and have a fun and balanced game!

Be careful. Epic 40K is actually the name of the third edition of the Epic game. The current, fourth edition, is Epic Armageddon, and that is the one that AoC is talking about above.

Thanks CS! That's what I meant indeed.

Space Marines aren't a beginner army in EA. If you are new, start with Guard and use proxy stuff till you understand the game figure out which army you want to collect.

Out of IG and Eldar, I would start with IG myself. Orks are a good starter army too. Eldar are quite difficult and not very forgiving, but very good. Marines are tricky.....

The game has a different turn sequence, where players take it turn to move formations. This makes for a battlefield that develops in real time, and allows for a wider range of tactics. It needs more planning, and it's a marathon, not a sprint....

I'm currently starting up Marines and Orks.

I really enjoy the fact that Marines are not a starter army, and are more the scalpel-like force that their fluff implies.

Go with collecting IG and Eldar. That way, we won't be competing for models on eBay.

IG is the way to go at start, get a wide range of units / rolls. Learn to deploy and use them in support of one another. Also, get lots of artillery, learning to use the big guns is key.

EA, or Epic Armageddon is a fun and thought consuming game along the lines of 40k and WHFB. Instead of Squads the game is played by building formations out of squads and/or vehicles and other types. I picture these formations as companies or platoons. The formations are used to resolve fire upon opposing formations, maneuver, close assault, and leadership.
A turn is played out by first determining who will do "actions" first by a modified die roll. The first player may then pick a formation to do several "actions". This is also determined by an activation roll to see if the formation will follow this order. Once the first player has actioned this formation they may try to keep the initiative by a modified die roll or let it pass onto an opposing player. A turn is over after all formations of both sides have done an action, and end of turn satisfactions have been made.
I look at EA as a "Grand Tactical" level game so to speak because you still use tactics but a strategy is also involved in how to complete your mission(s)
Another form of epic that is out there is a game(s) in the form of Netepic. The rules are on line and the price is free! The Netepic crew have spent years developing the game by playing and communicating on line. They are well thought out and concise. I should also mention they are definitely more involved than EA.
Follow the below link for more about these games and more. . .

Think there's an old out of date finder somewhere but its really old. If you post in the General Wargames section or Epic:A Section on Taccoms you should be good. We don't have Mod Nazis over there.
