I know this is old hat and has been discussed many times, with most people agreeing that the Space Marine Command Squad/ Honour Guard Squad is not a retinue. It never states that they are retinues in their rules and the BRB says that a retinue may be body guards etc or something similar.

My Lysander normally dies due to mobbing in combat, by keeping him with a command squad, using the retinue rules he would last longer due to gaining the effects of the apothecary, if the command squad does not count as a retinue, he doesn't gain the Feel No Pain rule granted to the command squad by the apohecary.

However, on page 104 of the marine codex, something missed by every post that I've seen on this subject it clearly defines the Command Squad/ Honour Guard as a retinue

Quote, refering to Captains and Chapter Masters "Each also has the option for a retinue unit- a Command Squad or Honour Guard Respectively-"

So command Squad, Retinue or not?

It is not a retinue, as there is no requirement for the IC to be deployed with them, and the IC is not a UC when with them.

Lysander does NOT need a retinue in order to benefit from FNP; he is only a separate unit when resolving attacks.

Cool, so after many years of Lysander dying to mobs of orks, guardsmen and termynids I've finally come round to the idea of keeping him alive a little bit longer, bring on thursday games night
