"I'm going to tell you, tonight, a story. And that story involves a really crappy power point presentation." In topic though, I've been saying sugar was evil in mass quantities for a while. People hatin' on my vices, but they're all fat :d

"What do the Atkins diet and the Japanese diet have in common? They both eliminate fructose"
I stopped watching at that point. The amount of ignorance required to make such a statement is beyond measure.

I'm a sugar addict. I'm not going to bother watching the link - I know. I don't think it's evil (because that's just stupid), but I know I have a problem.
At this very moment I'm drinking a sugar-free soft drink... it's kind of an anti-anxiety measure... like a smoker sucking on a pen. I get to the point almost every day where I'm literally craving a sweetened food product and I need to go out and buy a placebo.
I've never been overweight or anything but I know it's rubbish for me - in no other regard do I really take my diet seriously but diabetes probably isn't very awesome. As a kid I'd eat absolutely loads of just plain sugar and I completely aware that it's a substance that I'm addicted to. I probably always will be.

Note that I said sugar was evil "in mass quantities" (which is a bit misleading as everything is at that scale except maybe love or non-evil, which is the definition of not evil, is).
Srsly though, I was debating giving up my now-beloved Sudafed for a couple of weeks one day to give my heart a rest. It was at that point that I realized my craving for sugary products was 50x more than my craving for Sudafed. I had one Little Debbie snack cake the day prior (my first sugary anything for about a month) and it prompted a larger response than any drug I've taken. Anecdotes and all that jazz, but the stuff either needs to be less readily available or people need to control themselves a little. I personally wouldn't be opposed to seeing sodas made 18+.

anything in mass quantities is bad. Everything you eat shouldn't have sugar in it.
Our cells use fructose as fuel, just so you know. Our bodies need fuel to run. You have to get fuel from somewhere.

Next they'd be saying that my cannibalistic diet is no good for my health.
It empowers me with the defeated remains of worthy foes. What's not good about that?

The Japanese diet doesn't eliminate fructose.
The Japanese are fond of fruit and eat quite a lot of it. When I'm in Japan I normally have two or three portions of fruit a day.
The reasons why people lose weight on the Japanese diet are (1) portion control and (2) low fat content.

And they smoke like Thomas the train and friends. And they lead super stressful lives. Just because the Japanese do something doesn't make it right or better.

Did anyone else notice that the guy who did the presentation was a professor of pediatrics in endocrinology, which may mean that his argument holds true better for young children than adults.

Nope fruits are great for children. Anybody who says anything good about the Atkins diet should be flogged.

No, that's not true at all. Kids need fructose much more than adults.

@ Deadalus: lol
your brain needs sugar it's the only energy source it can utilise.
Also the dose makes the poison - too much water will kill you as will too much oxygen. So that's like me saying 'too much arsenic will kill you'
Keeping blood sugar down and using slow releasing carbs is definitely healthier than spiking your sugars all the time. Also fruit tends to contain fibre which slows absorption making natural fruit better.

No. In fact he specifically specifies whole fruit as OK, and explains why. You couldn't have actually watched the presentation and walked away with the impression that this was one of his points.

To quote a random dwarf from Neverwinter Nights.... "For once I agree with the little girl!"
Atkins diet removes CARBOHYDRATES. Not sugars. Kilkrazy wrote:The Japanese are fond of fruit and eat quite a lot of it. When I'm in Japan I normally have two or three portions of fruit a day.
Ah, no wonder you're so fruity. [/obvious joke.] sexiest_hero wrote:Nope fruits are great for children. Anybody who says anything good about the Atkins diet should be flogged.
I dunno if I'd go that far, but I do know that carbohydrates are supposed to be the main source of energy for human beings. The other three sources are fat, sugar, and proteins, and all of them have negatives associated with having them in excess.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I would say having love "in mass quantities" is bad too because most people find clinginess unattractive and by non-evil I assuming you mean friendly, kind, etc well people will take advantage of you if you're too kind.
