Something that made me smile the past few days was the formation of W.R.O.N.G by the online Games news site C&VG, formerly one of my fave Gaming Mags, before a tough market closed its doors and they ressurected it online. W.R.O.N.G or the Witless and Ridiculous Opinions Of Non-Gamers was formed after one biased games rant too many on Channel five's The Wright Stuff.
I was watching the show as I often do as I'm waking up in the morning and I saw Anne Diamond's Hilarious comment on how games inspired drive by shootings, I kid you not. However once again I was also frustrated while they laid into games as once again, folks moaning on how this games rot the kids brains, and are dangerous, how dare kiddies play levels like 'No Russian' and I'm there thinking, why are parents letting kiddies play 18 rated games.
So yes, it was nice to see a reply by CVG, and it's made me chuckle as dozens of folks, and now the leading Video Games political pressure group 'Gamer's Voice' have submitted official complaints to the TV watchdog Ofcom, as they showed clips of a couple of 18 rated games, including the opening of the 'no Russian' level as they open fire on the airport passengers.
Just thought I'd share for non Brits, and probably many Brits who maybe oblivious to the campaign. Oh and I'm not deadly serious here, its still all tongue in cheek as I post this, but it is amusing to see folks blasting your hobby actually see some sort of reply, and not liking it one bit.

I'll be keeping an eye on CVG just to see where this goes.

I think what we really need, is just people who are skilled at debating to crush people in an argument about games.
Half these people who are 'against' video games are just jumping on the bandwagon and actually have no idea about it.
Hell, half the time there is a school shooting, if the shooter has even sneezed in the general direction of a video game, the gaming culture takes the blow for it.

"The increase in rapes can be attributed in large part to the playing out of [sexual] scenes in video games." WTF there is sex in video games?!? "American society is changing for the worse because of the machines... In the past to flee the real world people usually chose drugs or alcohol... now you don't have to do that, Now all you have to do is have enough money to buy a machine...Basically what you have is a large portion of the population, mostly younger people under the age of 45, who don't deal with reality - ever. So they don't know what day it is; they don't know temperature it is; they don't know what their neighbour looks like. They don't know anything... because they are constantly diverted by a machine. This takes a person away from reality because they've created their own reality." Well if the other option is drugs and alcohol then I think we are going to the right direction. "Studies have found that violent video games are much bigger a negative influence on kids than pornography." From Ron Jeremy.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

Let them squeal.
More and more, games are becoming part of the mainstream media culture. The game being villainised here, Modern Warfare 2, outsold Avatar on DVD, the highest grossing film ever. These social panic feeding low-lives will soon have to give up demonising games and will have to find a new topic to cluck and moan about to keep themselves on television. Let them milk it while they still can.
Also, parents who are exposing their children to 18 rated content are making that choice. You can't them turn around and say you weren't warned, it's right there on the box. Pathetic.

This.
I watched the episode of "The Wright Stuff" that set this all off, and partway through, the woman on the panel goes "I come home and I'm shocked by what my children are playing!"
before almost immediately saying that video games caused a shooting.
She says this as if the video games have forced themselves into the house, and are threatening her with violence to force her to allow her children to play them, rather than her just not having the guts to stop the kids from playing on the games.
