Crusade-Captain Cortez Hedron
The Boreal Templars The Boreal Templars are an offshoot chapter of the Black Templars, or at least that is what they believe. There is no official documented history about the formation of the Boreal Templars, but records indicate that contact between branches of the Imperium and the Boreal Templars began in the year 890M41, two years after the Black Templars led a crusade into the Maelstrom. The Boreal Templars themselves believe that they originated from a skirmishing/foraging party that had been dispatched from the main battle force on one of the many chaos overrun planets. They believe that the party was somehow separated from the main body of the army, and being presumed dead were left behind when the army departed. With no method of transport and no way to communicate with the departed crusade, the men were forced to fend for themselves on the now abandoned planet. This planet spent 17 months out of 18 in half light and covered in snow, forcing the marines to fend for themselves in so of the harshest climes they had ever faced. After several months of surviving and exploration, one of the marines, a grizzled sergeant by the name of Ethan Maladon stumbled across a long disused landing pad buried in the snow, complete with an interplanetary freighter. While the marines no had the method to escape, they had no means of powering the freighter, or supplies for the long trip through hazardous space back to Imperial space. Eventually they found a generator which, with a few parts salvaged from the marine's life support systems and plasma weapons, was restored to a rough working order. With the ships engine charged, the marines all piled on, ready to return to Imperial space in order to meet up with the crusade and re-engage with the enemies of the Emperor. But to the marines horror, the ships computers calculated, with the weight of the marines, there was no way it could reach the required destination. As the younger marines were arguing about who should be forced to stay behind, Maladon calmly picked up his helmet and his bolter, and after checking his clips, strode out of freighter back into the snow. This show of events startled the younger marines, who ceased their bickering and began to sing songs of praise: to the Emperor, to Rogal Dorn, and to Ethan Maladon, who sacrificed himself so they could get away.
When they eventually reached civilisation, they were immediately stopped and spent the next year being investigated by both the
Ordo Malleus and the
Ordo Heriticus. Once they had been fully investigated and found to be clear of all taints of Chaos, they were informed that it was the year 889M41 and that the
Crusade of Wrath had finished a year earlier. With this in mind, they set off to find the Black Templars, but after a good period of time was spent searching for the Black Templars to no avail the marines realised that the only solution for them would be to branch out and form their own chapter as they could not find the Black Templars.
With this in mind, they applied to the High Lords of Terra and the Master of the Adeptus Mechanicus for the permission to form a foundling chapter of the Black Templars. When asked as to what they would name their chapter, the leader of this band of marines, Lycus Logan announced, "The Boreal Templars, in memory of our forefathers, and in memory of Ethan Maladon who sacrificed himself upon a Boreal planet that we all could make it home." The marines were held on Mars in relatively fine establishments until they received word that High Lords had convened and after long debate they had decided to sanction another Chapter under the condition that once the Boreal Templars were fully established, they would commit 1500 years to a crusade in memory of their forefathers and in order to show their unswerving loyalty to the Emperor of man and the Imperium as a whole. With this basic requirement established, the marines were informed that out of the 4 survivors 3 would be taken in order to create the progenoids necessary to form a chapter. Immediately two of the marines stepped forwards to sacrifice themselves for the good of the chapter. The other two were both unwilling to let go of their grip on life, even for the benefit of mankind, so instead they decided they would take part in a three part competition, with the lesser of two being committed into the growth vats and the survivor would do what was necessary to pave the way for the Boreal Templars.
