They like siege warfare...
Actually i don't recall that much on their pre-heresy organisation, or much else on them pre-heresy come to think about it.

Have you looked at the Lexicanum's entry for the Iron Warriors?
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Iron_Warriors#Pre-Heresy

It has a image of their pre heresy armour, a brief account of their history leading up to the heresy.

Pretty much the same as you'd use with post-heresy Iron Warriors: Vindicators! No obliterators, obviously, and they don't use daemons anyway.

actually they may excel at siege warfare but they never really cared for it. they just felt like that was all they were used for and hence they went to chaos.

Why walk when you can WAAAAAGH!!!!!

I know I'll likely take some flak for my opinions, but I've given some thought to the same lately as my next hobby project.

First I decided to use Codex: Space Wolves and just ignore any particularly "Wolf" unit. So no Thunderwolves, no Fenrisian Wolves, etc. Why did I choose this codex? A few reasons. First and foremost, I like Chain Fists. And Space Wolves can get a ton of them (having Storm Shield as an option with them, I still want to be at least semi-competitive after all). Second, they're fierce close combat fighters as compared to the World Eaters, or the Blood Angels (straight from the Lexicanum), so having Bolt Pistol, Bolter, and CCW, along with Counter Attack makes sense.

If you're truly going Pre-Heresy there are some vehicles to avoid, this applies regardless of the codex used. Whirlwinds, Land Speeders, and Razorbacks were not rediscovered until after the Heresy, so they wouldn't show up in a pre-heresy army. Same with Land Raider variants, the basic one was in use, but the Crusader, Redeemer, and other variants weren't developed til much later.

Predators(Autocannon armed), Vindicators, Rhinos, Drop Pods, and Standard Land Raiders would all be seen though.

Just my take of course.

If you know nothing then you might want to read up before you go making an army.

Pre-heresy is kind of an "advanced" army type to make. It requires a lot of attention to detail and conversion. If you don't know anything about them, take a step back and read.

I thought they developed the obliterator virus...? Be a great opportunity to model some very early obliterators.

They developed it. Post heresy. It is a warp disease.

That aside, there are some examples at the end of The First Heretic of the Iron Warriors erecting some prefabricated defenses and gun turrets that one could attempt to incorporate.

Also! If you can afford it, buy either IA9 or 10 (or both!) They have the Legion style and Siege style space marine lists which both fit the Iron Warriors really well (It also tells you in the blurb of the list that it is perfect for representing an Iron Warriors company or an Alpha Legion cell)

Techmarines and Vindicators immediately comes to mind with the Iron Warriors. Terminators armed with CMLs also seems fluffy, at least in spirit (methodical behemoths slowly advancing while laying down a hail of fire).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
