I'm looking to play Hordes/Warmachines. I plan on buying the actual rulebooks and such first and 'proxing" a few games. Looking at the site I am confused on what books I actually need, I've followed Hordes more or less since the start but is Primal 2 the current book? or do I need primal and metamorphoses? also the actual faction books. are they like Codices?

same thing for Warmachine, are there multiple rule books required or is Prime 2 the current and legends and such just older books?

thanks

Prime Mark 2 is the one you want, the legends and such is outdated book no longer used, Buy them if you want fluff, but as it were its rule is useless

Faction book is like codices, but you don't need to buy them, each time you buy a unit they came with cards that tell you what they do and all the rule for them

I suggest buying one of the battleboxes, as the game is not that easy to proxy without the cards, for both cards and warmachine

That, or buy Prime(al) and a faction deck for the faction you're interested in. Will give enough cards to proxy most everything. As a side note, the rules are somewhat tetchy about base sizes, so make sure your proxies are quite close to the appropriate sizes (30mm, 40mm, 50mm).

If you have a supply of D&D minis they substitute for WM models' base sizes pretty well as long as you're not mixing D&D minis with WM. They're not as big, but relative to themselves they work just fine.

The faction books do operate in a similiar fashion to a Codex. The core Rulebook has some of the model entries as an example where as your faction book will cover most, if not all of them. Along with a good bit of fluff and lovely art.

Thank you, I plan on getting a starter of two so I can mess around with I was just wanting to read the rules to better understand the armies.

also. . .

what is the competitive scene like for Warmahordes? that is the big attraction for me, competitive 40k has gotten more and more annoying in my opinion.

That is going to vary from location to location. Around here we are a pretty small group, but recently a couple of 40kers have begun to take notice (no small thanks to PP giving out free battleboxes at Adepticon). I suspect by the end of summer we will have gained the attention of even more 40k players.

With this link (here) you should be able to find one of your local Press Gangers. They are basically Privateer Press's street team. They're the ones that organize the official play and PP-supported demos, etc. They will probably be the best place to start in researching what your local WM meta is like.

Which of the two systems are you more interested in? If you plan to start a Hordes army but pick up the Warmachine rulebook(Prime Mk 2) instead of Primal Mk 2, you will have difficulty picking up all the rules. Same thing the other way around.

Once you've decided on a main faction, I recommend picking up the faction deck for that army - it will contain 90% of the cards you need. A few blisters of empty bases in various sizes would also help, because that way you can proxy units before you purchase them.
