So I've decided to cave and get Assault on Black Reach. But before I can get any paints, I have to decide what chapter/clan I want my Marines and Boyz to be in. I've pretty much decided on Goffs for the Orks (nice and basic), but can't settle on a Space Marine chapter. I don't want to paint them as anything that has it's own Codex, and I'm ambivalent towards Ultramarines. Every time I think I've found a chapter I like, I find something that keeps me from picking it. Raven Guard use Corvus armor almost exclusively, White Scars refuse to use Dreads, and I can't find any Crimson Fists decals and doubt I have the skill to freehand their logo.

So, if anyone has any suggestions for a vanilla chapter that's relatively simple to paint, thanks in advance.

I play Revilers, think they look very similar to Relictors.

You will find Imperial Fist/Crimson Fist decals, icons etc are in with all vehicles and on transfer sets.

If I did my army again (which would make me cry) I would go for Imperial Fists or Salamanders. This is based on having 6,000 of grey space marines. Wish I'd of chosen a more vivid colour scheme really.

Imperial Fists all the way.Lysander is one of the best higher point special characters.

Lysamder is very nice, I must say.

Imperial Fists, definitely. Darken the vivid neon radioactive bright yellow a little bit, and then go from there. Mmmm....Stubborn TH/SS terminators with lysander....

That and you just have to love the "To the last man and the last world!" mentality they have.

I would suggest either Salamanders or Imperial Fists. They are the easily the best two codex chapters IMO.

-With Salamanders, you usually take Vulkan, and tons of Meltas. Flamers, and Thunderhammer assault Terminators. Everything is twin linked - so it's very forgiving for a starting out marine player (makes up for small amounts of special weapons in squads). Vulkan himself is pretty strong, and has all the toys (2+ save, 3++ save, Master crafted relic blade, Digital weapons, twin linked heavy flamer) but at the end of the day he is just has captain stats, and will be eaten alive by super characters like Mephiston ect. Strongest point is the Master crafted Thunderhammer/Stormshield Terminators.

-With Imperial fists you get Lysander - a 200pt beatstick of epic proportions. Anything he hits is going to die from his Str 10 ap 1 hammer, and he can take quite a beating with 4 2+/3++ eternal warrior wounds. He also provides nice army bonuses- bolster defenses is the major one. Stubborn is nice to have sometimes, and bolter drill should be ignored. Lysander, unlike vulkan, does not pigeon hole you into centering your army around short ranged flamers and meltas, so you have a little more flexibility with building a list.

Both armies are fun to paint (Imperial fists are a bit more challenging then normal) and look amazing on the tabletop.

I urge you to reconsider Ultramarines. We've got Sicarius, Calgar, Tigurius, and Cassius. Why go for one option when you can have four?

Personsally, I prefer Ultramarines. You can stay flexible and not be pigeonholed into a certain strategy because of independent characters or fluff.

Imperial Fists are good for for that too, but they only have one, however worth-the-cost, independent character.

I really like Crimson fists, and Kantor is quite cool. But Imperial Fists is also neat, if you are good at painting bright colors. Also, Lysander is a beast.

I made my own. Its much more fun.

Give the Desert Lions a try. They have a tiny bit of fluff and no one has pictured one that I've seen so make it a nice desert set of colors and a lion icon on the shoulder and you are good to go.

I'm suprised at how many people went Imperial Fists. I was expecting to see an easier to paint army be more readily named. Of course as an IF player I can't deny their awesomeness, and I go full on high powered see it from space and light up the room in the dark yellow with mine. However any of Dorn's childern are nice. Black Templars and Soul Drinkers however are not vanilla marines so that counts them out. I'd go with maybe Crimson Fists, Subjugators, Iron Knights, or Executioners. They are simple to paint but still have plenty of fist icons to go about them. And a push for the CF's and the Subjugators are the ease in which they can be painted. Blue and red with one and Green and black with the other Plus the decals/transfers are in everything already for them

Make your own or go with Raven Guard, they are fun, or Salamanders!

Yes Rainbow Warriors, I have a rainbow warriors army, and people are often surprised to learn that they were one of the original twelve chapters described by GW. I had to bring in my copy of RT to prove it (and to show it off!)

But you should do Imperial fists, not Crimson Fists. Those kits work with both.
