Subject: Heavy Weapons Squads in Blob Lists
|
 |
Storm Trooper with Maglight

I'm running a foot Guard list and I need some recommendations for heavy weapons.
Currently, I'm running 3 platoons, with 6 blobs of 20 with Power weapons, a meltabomb and Commissar. Since I've got Al Rahem bringing in one of the platoons, I've got 10 open HW slots, but only 360 points to spare for them. What should I take for my HWT?
I could take 6 Mortar team, which would be hilarious, but ineffective. What I've got planned is 2 Autocannon and 2 Lascannon squads, which is 360 points, but I worry it might not be enough. Should I free up more points to field more HWT?

The only vehicles are the PCS squads in chimeras with Melta.

I'd say 3 squads of lascannons. No sense in doing anything halfway. Make sure you keep your CCS (and a standard) around to keep them inline and TL their guns.

Are you not taking any specials or heavies in the blobs?

No, as that defeats the purpose of the blobs, which is to hold objectives cheaply, and tar pit enemy units. About the only specials that would be useful would be flamers, or grenade launchers. A BS3 melta shot isn't that helpful.

That's true. I would say that grenade launchers are worth the points, but considering the build of you list and your limited points to spend on your HWS it would probably be a waste. I agree with daedalus then, go with all lascannon.

i would invest in a lord commissar to be parked near the heavy weapon teams. his leadership 10 makes sure orders will be recieved. you need that twin link and other goodness to happen.

Indeed, we need a better look at your list. I will say that Priests with Eviscerators and meltabombs can be surprisingly good at taking down anything but a Monolith. Don't think that your Guardsmen are only useful as meatshields.

Forgive me if I'm wrong here, but isn't a powerblob's main strength is the large number of Guardsmen/ablative wounds taking hits while your power weapons grind down the enemy?

Exactly, but they're not JUST meatshields. Sure it's the 20 some odd power weapon attacks that do the most of the damage, but the unedning horder of regular attacks does some too. You can do more with your Guardsmen than have them be ablative wounds, even though that is their primary purpouse.

Off-topic: I thought Eviscators could hurt monoliths. Str6 base attack and 2d6 AP?

For those who don't want to click:
HQ 165
CCS 4x GL, Chimera (125)
Troops 1875
Platoon A, B
PCS: 4 x melta, Chimera (125)
Squad 1, 2: Commissar w/Power weapon, Sgt. w/Power weapon, Meltabomb, Sgt. w/Power weapon (175)
Squad 2, 3: Commissar w/Power weapon, Sgt. w/Power weapon, Meltabomb, Sgt. w/Power weapon (175)
HWS 1: 3x Lascannon (105)
HWS 2: 3x Autocannon (75)
Platoon C:
PCS: Al raheem, 4 x plasma, Chimera (215)
Squad 1, 2: Commissar w/Power weapon, Sgt. w/Power weapon, Meltabomb, Sgt. w/Power weapon (175)
Squad 2, 3: Commissar w/Power weapon, Sgt. w/Power weapon, Meltabomb, Sgt. w/Power weapon (175)
There's the complete list. The idea is that the 6 troops fan out and take points while the chimeras draw fire. The lascannons take down the heavier armor, the autocannons take down the lighter armor/ MC. The meltabombs are support weapons, as I get tend to get stuck in a lot of fist fights with Dreadnoughts.

Damn living metal. You only get 1d6, so it's 6 + d6, which can't hurt the damn thing.
Mortart are fiun, and in large numbers with a PBS, there's the possibility of pinning lots of the enemy's units around the tabl, which is always nice.
