The spill was a year ago this week.

Congressional bills S.861 and S.862 would require that 80% of the money paid in fines by BP go directly to affected communities, rather than to the general fund of the US Treasury.

Here's another petition you (US voters/residents, again; you need a US zip code) can sign if you support this idea.

Why wouldn't the fines go to the gulf coast?

On a related note, kind of bridging this thread and the Fairness in Taxation thread, there's another petition going around for Earth Day.

This one's to ask BP to not use their $13 billion losses as a tax writeoff. They've already written off the $40.2 billion set aside for cleanup, and the $20 billion victim compensation fund (though they've paid out less than 20% of the latter so far).

It's funny. BP's tax credit is bigger than the entire budget of the EPA.
