Have you ever downloaded a GW PDF without paying before?
All the time! I've got almost everything made.
Just for some to see if i'd be interested in the army.
Only for the ones i own so i can go on the computer and see them.
No! That's wrong.

Do you think that Online Piracy is a thing that GW needs to worry about?
Has GW ever gone into a huge Online Piracy fight before?
Have you ever pirated?
Will me admitting to Pirating Codex's (Plural for Codex? Codec's?) cause me to be dragged out to the street and shot?
What does Dakka think about all of this?

I downloaded quite a few older GW books, such as several of the older codex's.

However I never played with them, I merely was looking to see if I was interested enough to get into the game, which it turned out I was.

So I bought AoBR and a BT codex and now I'm set.

I have a hard copy of the codices for the armies I play because I'm getting back into competitive gaming and showing up to GTs with a photocopied codex isn't a good look. But I also have .pdfs of all the codices, the rulebook, etc on my drive so when I want to look something up, I can.

If someone came into the FLGS with a photocopied codex, I wouldn't think twice about it, because I don't really care if GW gets their hyper-inflated product pirated.

I really only do it for prospective armies, just to see what I should get. I always get a hard copy later though.

For my personal education of armies, I have all the rulebooks and codices in .PDF format. But I have my Dark Angels and Eldar Codices in print, as well as the AOBT rulebook. I think if you're going to get into an army, having a hard copy is important. I get mine from eBay a lot of the time and save about 40%.

I view it a lot like I do music and movies. I'll download a copy. If I like it, I'll definitely buy it.

Besides, it's a lot easier to read a hard copy.

boughten
Bought is the past tense of "buy". There is no past tense for bought since it already is past tense. "Boughten" is not even close to being a word.

And for all the people rationalizing stealing for something that's not even a necessity like food, well maybe you'll understand why stealing is wrong after you've had something stolen from you, especially if the thief then unknowingly tries to sell it back to you. I don't steal the models I can't afford and I don't steal the books either.

Lost in the warp. Halp!

As others say. I try it out, see if I like it, if I do -- I buy it. If I don't -- I delete it. I call it a demo.

(These days, I can usually find the music I'm potentially interested in on YouTube, so I don't bother with that anymore. And if I can find someone locally to borrow a rulebook, I'll do that too. It's easier.)

I buy the army books for armies that I play.

If I just want to check stuff out because I might want to play the army, I'll check it out online somewhere.

If I get into them, then GW gets a sale. If I don't, GW don't get the sale they weren't going to get anyway.

Somehow I think pirating codices is an extremely minimal loss to GW and also a very low percentage of the cost of playing the game.

I dont really expect people to buy army books for armies they dont play. Guess I just dont care if they pirate books. When people start pirating models on a large scale let me know, maybe it'll matter then

Personally I have a PDF collection of every book printed. Ive also bought all the FW books, and most of the codices. Honestly couldnt care less what other people think, as it doesnt impact the hobby in the slighest except make opponents more knowledgeable and maybe even get people into different armies

There are more important things to dwell upon

I believe that pirating codexes is perfectly fine, there are many people who dont want to drive to their FLGS to look up one specific rule, and dakka is not legally allowed to list the wargear and points cost of every item, only discussion of them.. HOWEVER, if you do not have the actual rulebook for the army you are fielding in person, it is heavily frowned upon, and in most tournaments not allowed. What is most annoying for me is waiting for my opponent to flip through a copy of a proxy book, as the Codex tends to have heavier pages making the page you need much easier to find.

I have several questions for you if thats ok.

What if i pirate the Codex and then like it. I then buy the codex and GW makes money? Is it ok then?

So it's theft if i download the codex and GW doesn't get it's cut? If so does that mean buying used is wrong because GW doesn't get it's cut? If so should we shut down the Dakka Trade thread?

Should used book stores be shut down as well?

It's okay to have questions, but if they are nonsense, obfuscation and irrelevant then I hope it's okay that I don't answer them.

These two things are not similar.

"Used bookstores" are businesses that operate off second-hand material, acquired legally. They're not publishing their own copies of the books.

The publishers have been paid for the material, no matter how it goes. Scanned in material isn't necessarily acquired legally and there's no limitation on how many people get into that material.

ITT: People that need to get mad, getting mad.

I'm indifferent to whether people download the books or not, because most of those people aren't go to buy the books regardless. So it's not worth getting mad over.

Unless you're one of the people that desperately need to get mad.

This is the same boring garbage thread that's been posted on every gaming forum time and time again. It's been done to death.

I'll allow it. I don't mean to start any fights. I'm just interested in people opinions of the whole thing. I've never really been part of a Gaming forum before. I pirate movies, music, books, software, games, and anything else i can get my grubby little fingers on. The written word has always just been a weird point for me. When does it go from taking really well detailed notes to theft. And is the theft "Wrong".

I admit i'm stealing. I just refuse to think that it's wrong.
