Essentially, it's a skirmish game where various gangs fight it out for turf; gang war in the far future. Good, self contained, easy to play, nice campaign options. Get a couple of gangs so you can play with a mate. Very popular in its day (rightly so), and the rules are free from GW site specialist games bit...

As SoD said. I love it, it's the game that got me into the hobby. In many ways it combines elements of RPGs into wargaming, as your gangers earn skills and 'level up.' Thoroughly atmospheric, engrossing and fun.

Not many at all. About ten would be the most you'd have in a starter gang.

EDIT: Oh, that just brought back a memory. One of the reasons I decided to start playing Necromunda was because I didn't want to spend all that money to build a 40K army. Haha, oh dear.

Necro is notable for being a skirmsh game where each figure in your gang operates as it's own unit. Each ganger has it's own unique weapons and stats and -played as a campaign- can develop individually over time.

It's a great concept that GW really should reissue, and probably would if there wasn't so much more money in making large scale battle games.

Still, the rules are free and quite good, and the figures are still avaialble, or you can use other brands of figures.
