Just wondering whether people preffered the Battle for Macragge boxset or Assault on Black Reach?

Macragge certainly had more character to it, in my opinion. The whole crashed lander with the pilot and everything setup a nice set of scenarios. The Tyranids and Space Marines made for a classic matchup.

But then with Black Reach you had another classic matchup of Marines and Orks. The only thing I didn't like about BR was the fact that it is literally two armies having at eachother. That said, you got a nicer set of models if you're looking for big-hitters (relative of course) in the form of a Dreadnought and Deff Koptas. Having those in the box definitely makes AOBR the better value set by far, when compared with Macragge which was a few Troop units...

I think that I preferred Macragge purely because of the more scenario-based setup (but also because I prefer Tyranids to Orks) because that's the style of games I prefer.

Well.. I voted AoBR as i would say you get alot more for the money. You get a decent amount of units and some extra stuff as a mini-rulebook and all Blast templates and some dices but you get the same bonus from Battle For Macragge. So we can only mesure from the units this box have.

The contents of AoBR include units as:
Space Marine Commander
10x Space Marines
5x Terminators
Dreandnough

Ork Warboss
20x Shoota Boys
5x Nobs
3x Death Copters

As an Ork player myself having these units is a good starter. But in general you get alot more units from AoBR then BFM. In Battle for Macragge.

In BFO you get 10 plastic Space Marines, 1 Imperial Pilot, 8 plastic Genestealers, 8 plastic Termagaunts and 8 Spore Mines.

As you can clearly see the amount of units is alot bigger In AoBR, you only get some terrain that you could easy live without.

Both the Marines and Orks get a nice plastic HQ each as that is pretty awesome no damn metal HQ as it usually is. The Orks get 3 Deffkoptas too as they cost a pretty big amount on GW and you only get 1 metal one. So that is a big 1+ on getting AoBR. Terminators and a Dreadnought isen't bad either. But i would rather buy that from the GW in there original box as i would have quipped them diffrently then what they comw with in AoBR especially the Dreadnought.

So my conclusion would be AoBR is 5 times better then the old Battle for Macragge edition!

But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.

AoBR, easily. Comparing box sets means looking at the models, and Deff Koptas and a Dreadnought sell it alone. Coupled with Nobs and Termies, you've got yourself an over-achiever

Even though I started with BoM, I still think AoBR is way better, due to more models at a far better deal. Sure, you don't get nice terrain pieces or a good storyline-based scenario, but plastic deffkoptas are pretty useful.

Black Reach easy. The mini-rulebook/dice/templates. It's a great starter set for someone new to 40k and that makes it far better as a boxset item.

Macragge was pretty fun with the scenarios but in perspective of what it gave you it was pathetic compared to AoBR.

The terrain in Macragge was nice, but the amount of models and quality of sculpting is so much better in AoBR.

Value wise, AoBR. However I dislike the set because it pretty much crams SMs down your throat, unlike Macragg where a lone squad didnt really put that much commitment on you. It also crams Orks down your throat, but being a xeno race (and thus outnumbered by the amount of SM players) it's a bit acceptable.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

A starter set that gets people started with an army? Who knew!

I went with Assault on Black Reach. Terrain pieces are nice, but AOBR just gives you so much more to play with and it really helps you to get into the game.

The fact that AoBR had the best deffkopta models available and, possibly, the best warboss definitely made the model set stand out.

I went to GW last september with my Brother inlaw. I played back in 2nd edition and then just stopped, had a few games in 3rd edition but mostly just painted models that looked good.

So after prelonged exposiure to Dawn of War 2 multiplayer we decided we had to get back into the hobby properly. I had decided on Orks and Rob had decided on Eldar, I had a rough idea what I wanted, HQ, troops, HS and a codex.

All this went out of the window when the red shirt pointed out AoBR, now I get all those orks the rules and a big saving! So that gave me free cash to get some more boyz (can never have enough right) and a dread.

Managed to then swap the Spacemarines for 2 lots of the AoBR Orks

So in terms of the sheer number of models AoBR wins hands down got me back into the game in a much larger way than I thought was possible.

Both are a lot of fun. Obviously AoBR is more current(I don't even think BfM is still available) and gives you great starting units for either army. You can sell off the army you don't want to play as I did to make the set one hell of a deal, but I kinda wish I kept the Orks around for a friend to play.

My Armies:
- Death Wing and Green Wing
- Tacticals and Devastators
- Retired
