Subject: Trade in system for wargame edition updates? Could it ever work?

I know some video game companies do this but obviously theres a world difference between trading a DS for the step up (both are still valid products) to trading a 2nd edition rulebook for a 3rd edition rulebook (one is now not valid to the general system while one is). But still I wonder, would it make updating wargames more attractive/easier on the mind if you could trade in old products for store credit towards newer products? Its perhaps easier on much smaller group orientated games such as Dungeons and Dragons were all editions are available since its a group and not a gaming scene

Wouldn't make financial sense to the company. They exist to make money, but if they offered something like this, then they would throw away most of their profit.

They had a trade-in for the Flames of War rulebook. I can't
remember how or why it happened, though.

You would be required to trade in the Entire Boxed set... unless you are simply discussing Rule Books, in which case, many older edition rule books provide necessary fluff and pics...

If I remember right it was simply you could trade in the big rulebook for the updated edition if you bought one of the campaign books at the same time or something of that nature.

Well not as in 100% off, just a little bonus like 10-40% or whatever off. Of course certain companies like gw would be appalled at the thought of a price reduction I suppose

And what would the company do with all the old rulebooks? It would cost money to collect and destroy them so I still don't see this making much sense to be honest. Who pays for the shipping and handling? Or do I have to go to a valid store to turn in my rulebook?
Lots of questions you need to answer and there are associated costs.

Certain older rulebooks go for a mint on Ebay

When Flames of War 2nd ed came out, you could trade in your full size 1st ed rulebook for the "mini" second ed rulebook with no other strings attached.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity...... |

"Rare" is a perception.
If a company has a warehouse full, but only releases so many at a time, they are still perceived as rare and will maintain value... given that demand remains.
Similar to diamonds... they diamond companies have warehouses full of them, but release them at a trickle onto the markets.

Old rulebooks can be recycled.
Clearly there are a lot of facts and figures to be sorted out, and it might not be commercially viable.

Assuming that GW decided that it wanted to offer a discount to existing players, I would suggest that you present your old rulebook, get a stamp on the inside cover (so your mates can't all use it to claim the discount) and purchase new book at reduced rate.

Giving books out for free/discount defeats the point of GW republishing these books in the first place. They *want* you to buy them twice.

Yeah, I'd go with this. GW are thinking profit with a new edition, nice little splash earner every few years. Well every two (alternating systems of course, for a while now.) I'm sure Flames of War where trying to be fair and helpful to a growing gaming community with that offer, GW just wants the moola.

GW have already done this. They had an offer running in the dying days of 6th ed. WHFB IIRC that if you bought the boxed game you got x amount off the new rulebook when it was released.

I feel like this wouldn't work in the case of 40k or LoTR, where both core rulebooks have essentially made the older ones worthless. Our FLGS does exchange old rulebooks for RPG systems for store credit (or cash,) but think of it like the transition from DnD 3/3.5 to 4th edition, if you're familiar. Chances are you'll only get $2-3 USD tops for those books!

To be fair, the old RPG stuff still has replay value. For whatever reason, you don't see people going around playing 3rd/4th edition 40k. Genuinely not sure what the difference is. I suppose it might have something to do with the fact that not all of your army would be valid if you went backwards though.

They probably aren't different enough to the current version to be worth the effort. I get the impression that people still play RT and 2nd edition, but they are very different to the modern game.
