Best Coast

So, I splurged today and bought some CSM items at my LGS. Here's what I bought

CSM battleforce
1 box plague marines
1 box CSM infantry
1 box berzerkers
1 rhino
1 daemon prince
1 khorne lord
2 obliterators

Before I begin assembling, could I get some pointers in what direction I should go? I would like to keep the army with a khorne/nurgle theme, hence the rhino's for the berzerkers (so i don't have to use the LASH on my DP).

Is it possible to build a successful list with what I have? I'm pretty sure i'm going to hear that I should take another DP, more obliterators and possibly more plague marines. I dropped a little more than $300 today just on this, purchasing anymore is out of the question for now. Anyways, any help would be much appreciated. THANK YOU DAKKA MEMBERS!

Hey there Chadbacca,

You've got a decent core for a balanced CSM force.
There are a few things (your gonna hate this) that i'd recommend to complete this.

Transports:
You've got two thus far, every squad should have a dedicated transport!
- For the interim, i'd recommend that these are used for the zerkers' as they will get shot to gak before they reach combat.

Heavy Support:
Oblits are the best, as your aware of you'll need more of these. Defilers are also excellent, but you need to run these in pairs. You could run 2 defilers and 3 oblits. Or you could run either 3 x 2 or 3 x 3 oblits.

Plague Marines:
These guys are boss. Prob up there with the best troops in the game. I'd look at least getting another box. Very well rounded.

Basically everything else is gravy, a sample list would prob look something like this: (excuse the lack of points as my codex is in my room and i cant be bothered going down the hall)

HQ:

Daemon Prince
-MoN
-Warptime

Chaos lord*
either
-Mok
-Daemon weapon

or
-MoK
-Lighting claws

*personaly i'd go for another Daemon Prince

Troops:

8 Khorne bezerkers
- Skull champ with power fist
- Rhino dedicated transport

8 Khorne bezerkers
- Skull champ with power fist
- Rhino dedicated transport

7 Plague marines
- 2 meltaguns
- Rhino dedicated transport

7 Plague marines
- 2 meltaguns
- Rhino dedicated transport

Heavy Support:

Obliterators x 2

Obliterators x 2

Obliterators x 2

Something like that is generally the way to go, I'd add a summoned greater daemon or a termicide unit also.
It's up to you really

Feel free to ask any questions, i'll try my best to answer them!

Jesus hit it on the head. Personally I shy away from metal models, they are expensive and can break/chip. IMO convert your plague marines. Here is a good guide to help nurgle them up: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=cat440167a&categoryId=400029§ion=&pIndex=15&aId=1200005&start=16&multiPageMode=true, this and the one below it on pustules is nice. Glob some green stuff on a shoulder pad and use the plastic tube of a brush protector to make the 3 dots of Nurgle on the shoulder pad. I am also using zombie heads from the fantasy end on some models. 15 CSM models in the battalion and you got you 14 plague marines in the list above. Order the melta guns from GW and use a possessed marine arm for a 2nd power fist if you want for them.

For obliterator conversions look here: http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2009/06/40k-hobbypainting-budget-obliterators.html and get some IG heavy weapon bitz on ebay, trade forums or trade at your local gaming store. $100 for the 9 you will eventually need sure beats $200. Berzerkers are great pick up another box. DP is perfect. I personally feel the lord is probably my 4th HQ choice behind a DP with MoN and warptime and a lash prince and a lash sorceror and when comparing the lash prince to the lash sorceror for 10 more points you get a lot more in the deamon prince so get 2.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd
