I just finished work on a few Iyanden Warlocks and sprayed them with Varnish. I tested it out with some gloss varnish and, predictably, they now look like hard candy. I really dislike how this turned out. While one of them will get stripped (as he was a test model) the other turned out pretty good, so I loath to put him into the bath. Is it possible to spray a matte varnish over the gloss to reduce some of the sheen or is stripping my only option?

Yes, you can, and it'll be better protected as gloss varnish is suppose to be thicker than matt varnish I believe.

Yes you can.

Gloss IS thicker, and offers best protection.
Matt will soften the effect, but not reduce the protection (if sprayed over gloss).
Matt by itself is barely better than no protection.

glad to know I didnt waste my energy. Will the dulling effect be complete or will there still be some gloss sheen?

The gloss coat is a harder coat, so gives better protection; I normally do a gloss, then spray it with Testor's Dull Coat, and it comes out perfectly flat.

Depending on how thick you put the matte on, there can still be a little gloss showing through in the recesses. But generally, a good matte spray will kill the shine pretty effectively.
