I've decided to go with catachans as my next 40k army, fluffy being the optimal word! Fluffy in all sense of catachans is lots of Flamers/meltas/sentinels and also straken, marbo and Harker, so i put together a list with some help...

HQ:

CCS, Colonel 'iron hand' Staken, Heavy Flamer
Vox caster, 2x flamer, Krak Grenades
Chimera w/ 2x heavy flamer, camo netting =235

ELITES:

Guardsman Marbo
10 ratling Snipers =100
10 ratling Snipers =100

TROOPS:

Infantry Platoon, Vox Caster, Heavy Flamer, 2x Flamers
Infantry Squad, Flamer, Vox Caster
Infantry Squad, Flamer, Vox Caster =185

Veteran Squad, shotguns, 3 meltas, demolitions, Harker =185

Heavy Weapon Squad w/ mortars
Heavy Weapon Squad w/ mortars

FAST ATTACK:

3 Scout Sentinels, Autocannons, searchlights, camo netting =123
3 Scout Sentinels, Autocannons, Searchlights, camo netting =123

2 hellhounds, camo netting 300

HEAVY SUPPORT:

Leman Russ Battle Tank, Camo netting =170

TOTAL =1706

I've got 44 points left to spend on upgrades or change a bit about to add something in. Any suggestions on what i can change around or add in would be appreciated
This would blow horde armies away but as for a mech force i'd struggle with.

Personally I'd drop the Vox casters and throw in another flamer toting infantry squad.

Well all the vox casters are there due to catachans being mostly jungle dwelling, they kinda need to communicate better. But saying that i kinda need it to be balanced a bit between fluff and affectiveness on the table top

On the table top I'd rather have 10 more guardsmen than 3 voxes. Perhaps you should drop a ratling squad and then add more stuff to the platoon.

Also why not stick Missile Launchers on the Sentinels? Doing so would make them much more useful.

I say you need some more decent anti-tank + anti-heavy infantry, since you have plenty of anti-light infantry. If you don't want to include meltavets in a chimera, I'd say that a Manticore would be a good buy for this army. I also think having a huge missile launcher camoflaged and hidden away somewhere in a forest where it can fire indirectly on targets makes a lot of sense fluff wise. To get the points, I would cut the two mortar squads, because they don't really fit the army, or even the theme of the army, IMHO. You could get the last points for it by halving one of the ratling squads, or downgrading the heavy flamers to regular flamers as they are a bit too expensive compared to what they do. I think that flamers on the HQ squad is a waste of good BS4, but I guess that Straken could take the tanks out in CC, so meltas might not be needed. You should atleast exchange the camo-netting for a dozerblade, so the chimera can crush its way through vegetation so the flamers can get in range and not get stuck in a bush xD

Also, you should really combine the two regular infantry squads, cut one of the voxcasters and add a commisar and three power weapons for the remaining points! Catachans really dig close combat, and that would give them a useful role in the list as a counter attacking unit/protection for the Manticore.

To fit in with the fluff, catachans tend to be fiercly independant and don't take orders from authorotive figures such as commissars. changing the camo netting for a dozer blade seems valid so thats changed. And having flamers on the HQ is a waste of BS4 so the heavy and 2 other flamers have been changed to meltas. A squad of ratlings has been dropped and the autocannons on the sentinels have been changed to missile launchers. Heavy weapon squads have been dropped too, lets face it they're not going to hit anything in the middle of the jungle except for trees. Vox casters have gone from the infantry squad to make the platoon and 2 squads combine in to one squad. Hellhounds are now banewolfs with no camo netting also the leman russ has no camo netting either. Now i have 94 points left over to add something in, maybe another infantry squad?

First off, I'm glad to see someone doing a "fluffy" list rather than a "whatever everyone else does", list.

Second, I upgrade your HWS with Autocannons. They're great for taking down heavy infantry or light vehicles. Mortars aren't that great IMO.
