They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Let Gallipoli be a reminder to all of the horrors of senseless conflict

Lest we forget.
I am pleased at least to see Julia Gillards move for more recognition both of Australian vets from the Korean war but also Indigenous and Torres Straight Islander veterans.

For those who don't know - Anzac day (public holiday) recognizes the "diggers" ultimate sacrifice in the landings of Gallipoli and in other theatre's of war (similar to the remembrance day celebrated by others)

It's also now (co-?)celebrated with Turkey (who the Anzacs fought at Galipolli), who defended their country against overwhelming odds.
It should also be pointed out that the Anzacs made up barely half of the campaign forces, with just a many French/British/Canadian forces in the fighting as well, and their efforts should not be forgotten.

But we ALSO have remembrance day in November each year. 11am on the 11/11, where the one minute's silence is also traditional and considered 'proper'.
Anzac day is when those served (and are still alive) and those who serve, march side by side and all of the fallen are remembered.
Those who complain about having to get up early for the dawn service ...
YOU volunteered to do it (or by extension, are in a position where your volunteering is expected - but you generally volunteered for THAT).
So live with it.

I'm just jack of a couple of the "choccos" (reservists/chocolate soldiers because they melt in the heat) in my games club here complaining about having to get up early for Dawn Service when they volunteered for the duty.
When I was a Full-timer, I didn't HAVE a choice.

Im glad that Turkey also celebrates Anzac Day, they were honourable fighters, the British tried to convince us they use gas and were scum bag sneaks but there seemed a mutual respect between us and the Ottomans. Certainly it was a horrible situation but it amazes me how something so dreadful can really bond nations. I always laugh when I read how the Anzacs and the Turks used to have intermediate periods to socilaise and trade goods before going back to machine gunning one another.
As for Anzac day itself, I admit I am lazy and I dont tend to get up on the Dawn Service, I certainly appreciate the efforts of "ALL NATIONS" who helped to keep our country free of Imperialists even if we have participated in some wars I plain dont agree with, Im just not a morning person.
I prefer to honour them in my own way each and everyday, by living happy, free and treating people of every culture and colour with the true Australian spirit, dignity, honour and good will. Something some of our supposably "patriotic" citizens seem to be lacking, it makes me ill whenever I see a bunch of goons draped in our flag with bottles in their hands yelling obscenities to "non Australians" which basically equates to anyone not white proclaiming that they are the ideal Australian citizen, drunk and full of "ozzie pride".
Not to mention the destruction and mess they leave in our parks, our lakes and our environment that the Anzacs fought so hard to protect.
I just fail to see how violence, drunkedness and racism encapulates the Australian spirit at all.
