This scenario came up.

I destroyed a vehicle and the occupants took 30% casualties. They failed both thier pinning and morale checks. My question is which takes presidence? IE:

  • Would the unit be pinned and not fall back?

  • Would the unit fall back and not be pinned?

  • Or would the unit fall back and still be pinned?

  • In a similar manner, would a pinned unit that took over 25% casualties and that failed its morale check have to fall back? And if so, would it still be pinned?

Pinning test is taken immediately. They fail and go to ground. Morale test for 25% casualties is done at the end of the phase. They fail, pinning breaks, and the unit falls back.

The key phrase in the GtG rules is that the unit cannot take VOLUNTARY actions. Falling back is involuntary and therefore still comes into effect.

“Do not ask me to approach the battle meekly, to creep through the shadows, or to quietly slip on my foes in the dark. I am Rogal Dorn, Imperial Fist, Space Marine, Emperor’s Champion. Let my enemies cower at my advance and tremble at the sight of me.”

Thanks. After falling back and assuming that the unit rallies at the beginning of its turn, would they still count as being pinned or would they be free to act normally?
