I've got pretty much everything assembled in the DE army I'm working to build, so now it's just a matter of painting everything as I can find the time. I'll post up my progress here as I go. (Updates at the top of the post.)
**********
May 2nd:
I haven't had as much time to work on these as I'd like, so here's a little teaser: Wych WIP
I've done 9 of my 18 wyches like this. It was a fair bit of work, so I chickened out halfway through.
**********
My venoms:
I've built and primed three. For now that's about all I need (since I'm running a webway portal list). Cockpit and nose are made from an Eldar Vyper. The rest is mostly greenstuff and plastic sheets cut, filed, and sanded into shape. These were a very rewarding project, and the first time I've ever done something like that. My biggest conversion before this was sticking a space marine on a carnosaur.
My talos:
A reaper miniature + some spare hellion and wych bits make up the "pilots." Cryx warjack claws, plastic sheets, a ton of greenstuff, and a ton of guitar wire make up the rest. Not *quite* what I had envisioned, but once they're all painted up, they should do just fine.
Color scheme test:
The bone scheme may not be the most dark-eldarish thing possible, but I've never painted a white army so it should be an interesting challenge.
Beastmaster
I'm running two squads of beasts, so this is the first of 4 beastmasters I have to paint. I feel kinda guilty putting so much time into a one-wound model, but who knows...maybe I can use it as a special character at some point down the line. A bit disappointed that I can't give an Archon a skyboard. *shrug* It's made of another reaper miniature with hellion/wych hands and feet.

Heh, I think the vehicles are going to be put off as long as possible...until I work up enough courage.

You really jumped from basic conversions to this? WOW. Nice work on the Venoms and the Talos. The lines are so mooth and well-proportioned... must be nice to know that when the GW kits come out they'll probably be inferior to your own work!

Painting is gorgeous Bushido, as is to be expected from a GD winner, really no crits on anything for me, except maybe the halberd blade on the beastmaster looking a touch rough by your standards.
What amazes me is that back in the B and C days, I don't remember too much in the way of conversions from you, much less to this degree. Really amazing, hard to believe you can still have new tricks up your sleeve given all you have accomplished already!
Look forward to more Mr.Bowser!

@kenshin620: Heh, I wish I'd known about those before I started...might have given me more ideas to work with.
@Savnock: I based the Venoms off the sketch in the book, so GW's version may end up looking similar when they're finally released. Depending on what their Talos end up looking like, I might have to pick one up to convert as well.
@MajorTom11: I've always been exceedingly lazy, which is why marines were such an easy choice "back in the day." Their line of available models was/is huge, so there was really no need to build anything yourself. Besides, DE give the perfect excuse to strap some naked chicks into dangerous machines.
@catharsix: Thanks.

Beautiful work man, really stunning conversions. I love what you did with the venom. I have tons of raider rudders lying around so i may have to bite your style a bit, albeit with far less sculpting abilities.
The talos are very imaginative, i love it. Cant see in the picture, but do either of them have the guns on them/are you planning on including them? or is this more of a counts as. Seriously, your talos model looks straight out of my nightmares, absolutely perfect.
The bone looks great. Any chance you could post a quick walk through on it? Going to be using bone to single out my blood brides. Correct me if im wrong but it looks like you based with brown highlighted in bone and washed with mud/sephia, then did the edging in white/bone? Look very very nice. The blue is striking as well, i think alot of people would have gone for something darker, it looks great. My only criticism would be i think the bone may be too dominant on the model. Maybe thats what youre going for, but(and maybe its just my preference) i think a third color might look nice. I just have no idea what color i would add/where. im sure im being very helpful =P

@untoldstory: I've seen some venom conversions that used the spare rudders and aethersails and they turned out very well. You should easily be able to get something that works.
Neither of the Talos have guns. I just couldn't find a place to put them. But the guys around here aren't sticklers for small stuff like that and I won't be taking this army to any official tournaments anyway.
My bone technique can be found here. Bone is one of the few colors that I don't like using washes on. I'm not sure why, that's just the way I've always done it.
I'm thinking about using purple or something on the wyches, but I kinda like the essentially black&white scheme so I don't really want to go too overboard on accent colors.
@Vanq and nerdforest: Thank you both.

I like the venom conversions (they look a little like they should be Batman vehicles I think!) - interesting choice to paint Dark Eldar in the bone, but I think it works really well. The light blue is a perfect contrast colour.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

I am doing the exact same boney color for my dark eldar. I thought the color of bone is quite darkeldarish. But to make it more dark I added black veins across the armor.

wow - AWESOME
loving these - the shapes and curves are absolutely spot on, and the bone colour scheme is lovely (while I understand the literal dark armour of the GW colour scheme, it does strike me as a bit too obvious, and a tad lazy!) - I haven't gotten around to it, but I got some of the new Incubi and want to paint them white in a Star Wars Stormtrooper style You've just shown that a lighter colour scheme workd for DE
Can't waut to see more of these projects

@Ysclyth: I'm thinking about doing tattoos and such on the wyches (depending on how bold I get), but I definitely know I'm going to do a lot of freehand on the vehicles to break up all that empty space. Good luck with your army.
@Souleater: Yeah, bone can be difficult to paint. Just like any other light color. I've been fortunate because the colors I use do most of the work for me...they pretty much blend themselves.
@Bloodhorror: Heh, yeah yeah. I wish I could whip up some more pictures, but I've been very busy. I spent too much time as it is building the army (so I can actually play on weekends) and now have to get back to some of the stuff I need to do for other people.
@finnan: Lazy? I dunno. The 'Eavy Metal scheme works fine for a studio army and to move product. I just wanted something different. I think white Incubi in an otherwise dark army would look great. If I ever buy a squad, I'm not sure what I'd do to make them stand out...it would be such a shame to hide those nice minis behind a dark paint scheme.

think white Incubi in an otherwise dark army would look great. If I ever buy a squad, I'm not sure what I'd do to make them stand out
Why not in a white army, have dark incubi?
In my army, I felt the schocktroop from hell really needed to look really dark and doomy next to the rest of the army. So actually a typical scheme with them of mostly black with a less boney and more pure white patches on the armor. Basically the dark eldar codex has a good example of this. I'm sure you'll find a more unique way to make them pop!
I look forward to seeing the freehand on your vehicles. Just suck it up and dig deep, as my coach used to say.

I aboslutely love the bone armor that you've got. Before i ever saw yours, that was what i had been planning on doing with my dark eldar, Though i was thinking a dark blue body suit, instead of simply black. Im not quite sure what it is about your venoms, but they seem alittle off to me. It might be that the rear seems too wide to keep it the sleek and streamlined craft its supposed to be.

@MajorTom11: Whatever! I do what I want!
@FantasyBob: The Talos girls are from Reaper Miniatures: Torrent, Super Hero
I replaced the head, hands, and feet with various GW parts. The raider crew has some awesome open hands (for the driver, I think) to use in conversions. It's a shame there's only one set per sprue.
@stratassj: I was thinking about painting their body suits a different color, but I'm still on the fence about it. I think for the warriors it won't make much difference, but the wyches (since they're pretty much all body suit) it might be nice to have a little extra color there.
I can see what you mean about the venoms. The nice thing about them being that wide, however, is that I can easily put a mini on the back to represent the mounted squad and have room for an independent character as well.
@Kymera: Don't feel bad. My pretty space elves die to...well...pretty much anything...just as easily as yours do.
Thanks for the support, everyone. I'm working on some wyches that I hope to have finished very soon. In my quest to have them *not* look like catachans with boobs I made a lot more work for myself, however (at least for one of the two squads I'm running).
