Subject: Noob question about Troops vs Dreadnought

So my husband and I are still noobs that are in the middle of a game where he has a Chaos Dreadnought and I am trying to attack it with a squad of Seraphim and a squad of Battle Sisters.
Dreadnought counts as a vehicle, and the book says that against vehicles, in rolling to wound you have to roll a D6 + WS (or S if assaulting) and the result must be >= the Armor of the front/sides/rear (whichever you're facing).
Does this really mean that whatever is attacking a dreadnought, the strength must be within 6 less than its armor? Otherwise no matter how many hits you get on it, you can never cause any damage?
(For example, if the rear armor is 11 but my strength is only 3, it is impossible to roll >= armor)?
Unless of course a special something is used, such as I tried using a Faith Point to increase strength by 2 (test failed, tho).
Is this correct and this was a futile attempt?
Or are we doing something wrong here?
Thank you for any information!

Well firstly Dreadnoughts are considered walkers and you would have to strike its front armor. You roll to hit as normal WS vs WS. Then for each hit it's Str + D6 for armour penetration. If your Sisters dont have any weapons or abilities that allows you to increase your strength and you physically cannot penetrate the armour then youre stuck in hand to hand with it.

That isn't correct. A dreadnought is a walker and works differently in assault. It is explained on page 73.
With walkers you roll to hit as normal, comparing WS. Then you roll for armor penetration, which always hits front armor on walkers no matter where your attacking models are. armor penetration is S + d6. So yes, if your S is 6 lower than the walker's AV then you are unable to damage it (for example AV12 front is immune to S5 or less), which means you are stuck in combat unable to do anything.

The game will get a lot easier once you know what to call stuff, because then its a simple problem of looking it up in the index and finding what happens.
Your looking for Walkers, then read the Assault section of Walkers.

You were doing lots of things wrong!
Against walkers you compare their WS to your WS and roll for hits. Then you roll D6+S vs their front armour to see if you glance/penetrate. See P73
Against other vehicles, you check the table in the vehicle section for the to-hit value (depends on how fast they moved) and roll for hits. Then you roll D6+S vs their rear armour to see if you glance/penetrate. See P63
You can also use krak grenades and meltabombs against vehicles (both types). Rules on P63

confused me when i first started as well.
Walker work pretty much the same in assault as infantry, except they have armour values instead of toughness.

Also don't forget that Seraphim have a better variant of hit and run IIRC, that allows you to leave a combat that you aren't happy being stuck in.
