Hey guys. Old miniatures have a nice quaint rangeof 15mm sci fi's. I wanna pick some of this stuff up but does anyone knoe of any good 15mm sci fi rule sets? Does 15mm have any pros over 28mm? Just I love their figures and wish I had a good reason to buy them http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/ocproducts.htm middle collum stuff

The biggest plus is that ranges don't need to be quite as weird generally.

There's a lot of 15mm rule sets out there for various genres, though.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

Indeed.

15mm has been around (SF/modern/historicals) since at least the 80s.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

The main pro about 15mm is that you can get large battles easily without cluttering the entire table and paying an arm or a leg depending on what you buy. Easier to paint large numbers.

Plenty of rules out there, dont know too many myself though. Stargrunt is a decent system for generic sci fi

I like 15mm for Sci Fi (and moderns), you get more game on a given size table, or can play on smaller tables.

You can have armor support your infantry and still have room to manuever the way units really do.

You can get good looking units painted more quickly than 28mm units in my opinion. There are TONS of great figures and vehicles out ther, and more coming all the time.

Terrain can be easier to store since it generally smaller (thing of things like buildings here).

For rules, there are plenty as noted above. Some I like are Two Hour Wargames 5150 (try their free Chain Reaction 3.0 to see if you like their mechanisms: http://www.angelfire.com/az3/twohourwargames/pages/cr3.htm ). The guys at Ambush Alley Games are releasing a new version of Tomorrow's War, which I am involved in play testing, will be REALLY good: http://www.amazon.com/Tomorrows-Science-Fiction-Wargaming-Rules/dp/1849085315/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303856105&sr=8-1

Alien Squad Leader and the USEME Sci Fi rules ( http://www.15mm.co.uk/Publications.htm ) have gotten good reviews though I have not played them.

FUBAR is another set folks seem to like: http://thegamesshed.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/fubar-one-page-sfmodern-rules/

Dropship Horizon is a pretty good blog which covers a lot of 15mm scifi gaming: http://dropshiphorizon.blogspot.com/

I have a 15mm Sci Fi section in my Dakka gallery: http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-4402-4048_15mm%20Scifi.html and more on photobucket: http://s247.photobucket.com/albums/gg134/CptJake_Minis/15mmSciFi/ as well as a lot of other 15mm stuff on photobucket: http://s247.photobucket.com/albums/gg134/CptJake_Minis/ (check out the sub albums on the right for 15mm).

Finally, there is a great 15mm Sci Fi yahoo group which has a bunch of helpful folks: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/15mmSciFi/?yguid=127335446 and the photo group: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/15mmSciFi_Photos/?yguid=127335446 (obviously you have to join them to see what is there).

I had some friends who just wanted to play 40k (using 15mm minis and smaller scale terrain).

Maybe mix up the codices into one huge list so you can fit what minis look like to the figs you could find, but basically play the same game.

Why not?

Whole armies for under 100$! ? Yes please!

Vehicles are hard to come by.

40K specific vehicles may be hard to come by, but there are TONS of 15mm sci fi vehicles available. Everything from super high tech grav tanks to near future stuff, even some gothic type stuff. Some things could be easily proxied with historical vehicles as well (add a turret to a WWI tank and I bet you could come close to a land raider for example)

Also, sorry no, I play to many historical games just to paint WW2 (or any real world stuff) and call it sci fi, I want real sci fi minis!

Somewhere in south-central England.

1/72 scale model kits can be used with 15mm figures. They are a bit large, but this is often all for the best in SF games.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I was very interested in 15mm recently for many of the reaons mentioned here.

15mm sci-fi is really undergoing a renaissance of sorts as a new wave of figures and vehilces that are more detailed and more varied than ever are making their way to the market. Many of the figures being released almost look as detailed as 28mm, and the ranges are often quite deep with invidual races or factions having many sculpts and armaments to choose from. At this point, it's possible that there are more kinds of 15mm vehicles currently made than 28mm vehicles.

For more info about 15mm sci-fi rules, miniatures and proxies you owe it to yourself to check out the 15mm Sci-Fi board on TMP. http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/topics.mv?id=271

Also look up the Dropship Horizon blog.
http://dropshiphorizon.blogspot.com/

I never did end up going into 15mm because
1) I have alot invested in 28mm
2) I like customizing figures
3) I've had really good luck finding cheap 28's
4) My gaming club went with rebased Mechwarrior clix units (10mm) for cheap small scale gaming and never looked back.

Still, for the new Sci-fi gamer who'se not interested in GW miniatures I would definitely direct them to investigate 15mm.

Lastly, Check out Future War Commander (The lulu softcover is half the hardcover price) for a really good set of SciFi rules based on the activation mechanic from Warmaster. My club has had alot of fun with them in 10mm and they're great for 15mm as well.
