Tournament time - the first one I'll have been to as a solo player. I figure if I intend to go I should already be planning out a list and learning it like the back of my hand. This year tournament points are going upto 1750 and I'm looking for help on how to increase my Tyranids to meet this.

Currently I'm running the below 1500 point army with a fair amount of success so its more a case of expanding on something that works and try to further iron out its weak spots.

Tyranid Prime - Lashwhip, Bone Sword, Scything Talons, Adrenal Glands
Tyranid Prime - Lashwhip, Bone Sword, Scything Talons

20 Termagants
Tervigon - Scything Talons, Cluster Spines, Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs, Catalyst
8 Genestealers - Toxin Sacs
8 Genestealers - Toxin Sacs

2 Hive Guard
2 Hive Guard
2 Hive Guard

Trygon - Adrenal Glands
Trygon - Adrenal Glands

The army as a whole loves combat as you'd expect from Tyranids and has no trouble with mid armour thanks to the Hive Guard. Av 13/14 is currently handled by the two Trygons Str 7 2D6 charge and while this isn't a problem in 1.5k games I'm not sure what to expect in competitive 1750 lists where multiple land raiders can be used withought costing half the army.

So far my options are....

A 3rd Trygon with Glands and boost the stealer units to 9 strong each.

A 2nd Tervigon exactly the same as above and 11 Gants. Both taken as troops.

Drop a Prime and add in a 2nd Tervigon, boost all Hive guard squads to 3 strong.

7 Ravaners with Rending Claws and Regeneration on the 2nd Prime (he sits with the Hive Guard giving synapse and taking wounds for them).

Anyone got any ideas or able to spot any glaring errors?

I recommend some changes to the list. Take two 10 man squads and two tervigons. Why all those upgrades i think Catalyst, Toxin Sacs and Adrenaline glands is good. Also how about a hive tyrant those can be quite effective drop the primes and take a hive tyrant two TL dev and a guardor more. (Note my space bar is being weird sorry if words are stuck together.) Also multiple lands raiders are not used any more, que guardalpha strike list. I would try for another trygon or make those trygon primes. If you have more points (more hive guard ;D )

Same list, different army

I'm very very VERY anti Hive Tyrants. Its very easy to spend too many points on them to make them half decent and if i was going for MC HQ it'd be a Tervigon withought a second thought. Hence the drop a Prime for Tervigon and boost hive guard option.

I would drop adrenal glands on the tyranid prime, drop scything talons on the tervigon. A unit of 10 gaunts is only needed also. That frees up 65 more points. I would upgrade one of your trygons to a prime and drop the adrenal glands on it. Now you have a prime and a regular trygon with adrenal, now your opponent will have to choose their poison. Then i would add a mawloc, they are real handy. Don't be agressive with it unless it is an awesome target to go after. There are so handy late in games to contest table quarters and objectives. I would also add brood lord into your genestealer squads, they make up their points for me in every game. They suck up wounds and can an extra punch into your squad. I think this puts you around 1750, if not add some more hive guard. I've been really successful with a list similar to this. Other ideas are units of 15 gargoyles with adrenal glands, its a nice pressure unit thats real cheap. Turn one give them feel no pain and just go straight at your enemy, rarely have i ever had an enemy try to shoot them down on turn 1 or even 2. 13-15 hormaguants with adrenal and poison is a nasty unit as well. On the charge the can kill almost any outside of a vehicle. Use the 10 man guant squad to give them cover and by turn two or three your opponent is going to either choose to shoot the gargoyles, hormaguants or the tyrgons in his face.

I like Option 3. Dropping a Prime and boosting your Guards, and getting a second Tervigon.

I also like Hormagaunts. I run a super expensive 28 /w adrenal glands and toxin sacs. that way if the Trygons draw the fire, the Hormagaunts are force that shouldn't have been ignored.

I would also shore up the points on Termagaunts. 2 squads of 10, the Tervigon duo will be spawning enough to go around.

That is why when upgrading you use K.I.S.S. keep it simple stupid (from the office ) so keep a good upgrade to make them not that many points. Personally Hive tyrants if used and built right they are awesome.
