Today someone was using BA in a rather interesting (although i'm not sure if legal) way.
A lone commander with a storm shield was joined to Mephiston's "unit", and was taking lascannon fire etc for him. Is this allowed? I thought about it, and figured "yes", as mephiston may not be an IC, but he isan infantry unit of size one. Nothing should stop the Captain from joining that "unit" should it?

I don't see why you couldn't do this, the Captain is an IC and can join infantry squads. It's certainly an inventive way of keeping Mephiston alive before detaching him to allow him to fly over and flip a land raider.

This is not allowed as IC's cannot join units that are only ever a single model. Mephiston is a single model unit that only ever consists of him.

I can't see this rule anywhere in the BRB, could you please provide a page reference? Automatically Appended Next Post: Found it on page 48 - forgot about that rule. I'm sort of relieved - that would be one hell of a way to cheese up Mephiston!!!

Yes nothing can join Mephiston EVER! He can't even be in a transport with another unit in there. (Excluding storm ravens.... then he can also have a dreadnought in there, but not anything else.)

Just to clarify: First para on p. 48 of the BRB states "Independent characters are allowed to join other units. They cannot, however join vehicle squadrons (See the Vehicles section) and units that always consist of a single model (like most vehicles and monstrous creatures).
Mephiston being the latter of course.
